Michigan’s freshman quarterback Tommy Carr earned rave reviews from fans and analysts after a stellar performance during the Wolverines’ Maize versus Blue spring game on Saturday. Carr has been battling to be the Wolverines’ QB2 behind established QB1 Bryce Underwood next season during spring practice.
Analyst Raves About Tommy Carr’s Michigan Potential
During Monday’s segment of the “Bunch Formation” podcast, analyst Chris Vannini lavished praise on Carr’s performance during the Wolverines’ spring game and predicted that he would become a good player for Michigan in the future.
“Didn’t learn much about Michigan in terms of starters and who’s back, but freshman quarterback Tommy Carr looked really good,” Vannini said. “Like, he’s not gonna start over Bryce Underwood. He looked good, he’s six foot four, he can move, good numbers, that’s a prototypical guy right there.”
Carr went 21-for-30 for 143 passing yards, while adding 59 rushing yards after playing from the second quarter to the end of Michigan’s spring game versus Underwood’s 3-of-9 for 22 yards in limited game time.

Carr is a legacy recruit for the Wolverines as he is the grandson of legendary Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, who led the program to the national championship in 1997. The younger Carr flipped his recruitment from the Miami RedHawks to Michigan.
Kyle Whittingham Dismisses Carr QB1 Chatter
While speaking to reporters after the spring game, Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham praised Carr’s output but dismissed any speculation about him challenging Underwood for the Wolverines’ QB1 position by giving the two quarterbacks’ performances proper context.
“Well, Bryce is our starter right now, and it’s not any different after today,” Whittingham said. “Tommy has made great strides, and has really had a great pocket presence and escapability. He can extend plays, keeps his eyes downfield – all the things we look for in a big-time quarterback.
“I believe Tommy’s success is still really early in his career, but what he’s doing out there is impressive. Tommy Carr showed poise. Bryce had a limited time, just that first quarter. When you play a spring game, when you split up the team evenly, like we did, you’re playing with the ones and the twos aren’t together, so you’re kind of a hodgepodge.”
Despite being a freshman starter, Underwood earned a PFSN College QB Impact score of 78.0 after registering 2,428 passing yards, resulting in 11 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, while adding 392 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns for the Wolverines in his first season under center in college football.
