The most talked-about story in college football and sports as a whole is the Indiana Hoosiers football program. Their two-year turnaround has become one of the most remarkable stories in recent sports history. Coming off an undefeated season, the stakes are high for the Hoosiers football program for a multitude of reasons.
Well, the stakes just got even higher thanks to Indiana defensive coordinator Bryant Haines.
Indiana DC Haines Raises Stakes With Announcement of QB Coach Returning
When such unprecedented success occurs for a program like Indiana’s, which has been plagued by mediocrity for so long, the question remains: Will they be able to sustain that success for years to come? One of the most important keys is keeping as much of their coaching staff as possible.
Hoosiers defensive coordinator Haines went to X to raise the stakes as it was announced that Curt Cignetti will be reunited with the original quarterback’s coach, Tino Sunseri.

Haines posted on X, “O.G. crew is back together- – Good luck to y’all. #Reigning #Defending.” The return of Sunseri means he replaces Chandler Whitmer, who left the Hoosiers to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ staff as their quarterbacks coach. Sunseri returns to Bloomington, one year after leaving the program to take a job as UCLA’s OC.
Of course, Sunseri is highly regarded as one of the biggest factors in the 2024 season, which saw former IU quarterback Kurtis Rourke throw for 3,042 yards with 29 touchdowns for an 11-2 Hoosiers team. Sunseri’s coaching history with Cignetti predates their respective tenures at Indiana, as Sunseri was Cignetti’s QB coach at James Madison for three seasons from 2021-23 before heading to Bloomington.
The duo had much success there as well, helping quarterbacks average 3,400 yards passing and 32 touchdown passes per season at JMU.
With these guys being reunited once again for a Hoosiers team that brings in former TCU Horned Frogs quarterback Josh Hoover, who is coming off back-to-back seasons of throwing for 3,400-plus yards, much of the same will continue for Sunseri and Cignett’s passing attack.
Haines’ excitement in his post on X only raises the stakes for this football program, which hopes to continue its dominance. On paper, the Hoosiers appear poised to be among the best teams in the nation once again. With an experienced, talented quarterback like Hoover coming in to learn from coaches with proven track records of bringing out the best in quarterbacks, Indiana is in a great position for next season.
