Illinois QB Race Heats Up as Bret Bielema Prioritizes Scheme Over Spring Game

Bret Bielema canceled the Illinois spring game to implement a new scheme, pushing the heated quarterback battle behind closed doors.

Bret Bielema’s Illinois quarterback room is undergoing its most significant transition in years following the departure of three-year starter Luke Altmyer. As Altmyer prepares for the 2026 NFL Draft after a decorated career in Champaign, Bielema is overseeing a competition defined by a bridge veteran and high-upside youth.

How Carson Boyd Is Pushing Katin Houser in the Illinois Quarterback Race

The presumptive favorite to take the first snap as the Illinois quarterback in September is senior transfer Katin Houser. However, pushing him hard is rising redshirt freshman Carson Boyd, a three-star dual-threat prospect from St. Louis who is quickly gaining momentum within the program.

Illinois offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. made it clear on Monday that Boyd is no longer just a developmental piece. Instead, he is firmly entrenched as one of the top two options this spring, with Lunney saying the young quarterback is “ready to take the huddle” as his role expands significantly in practice.

Boyd didn’t see the field in 2025, but he was a standout on the scout team last year before quickly climbing the depth chart, passing older backups before they departed via the portal.

Boyd’s high school career paints the picture of a dynamic dual-threat playmaker, as he recorded an 80% completion rate across his sophomore and junior seasons. He achieved those numbers while often sharing snaps with other Division I-level teammates, earning him MVP honors at both the Elite 11 and Under Armour camps.

With the Illini losing several key offensive line starters and their leading receiver, the coaching staff is leaning on Houser’s veteran poise to stabilize a transitioning offense. He started 7 games in 2023 before transferring to East Carolina, where he took a major step forward in 2024.

That momentum carried into 2025, when Houser threw for 3,300 yards with 19 touchdowns against just 6 interceptions. He finished the season with an 83 rating in PFSN’s College Football QB Impact Metric, ranking No. 38 nationally. He has accumulated 6,438 passing yards and 43 touchdowns across his career.

With so much at stake, Bielema has chosen a more controlled approach to evaluating his quarterbacks. Illinois will not hold its traditional Orange-Blue Spring Game in 2026, opting instead for closed scrimmages.

“Will not have a spring game because they’re implementing a new scheme,” Bielema said on Monday. “Releasing the roster next week. Still playing around with new positions, so want to see what that looks like first.”

Whether by design or coincidence, the lack of a public spring showcase makes the Houser-Boyd competition more interesting.

Whoever wins the job won’t have long to settle in, as after a relatively manageable opening stretch, Illinois will face a defining early-season challenge with a road trip to Ohio State in September.
