Where Do the 2 Teams Stand Heading Into Week 11?
San Diego State defeated Wyoming 24-7 on Saturday, improving to 7-1 on the season. With a six-game winning streak, the Aztecs sit alone atop the Mountain West standings and are the only program from the conference receiving votes in both the Associated Press and Coaches Polls.
However, SDSU didn’t gather enough votes to enter the top 25. Still, head coach Sean Lewis remained confident in his team, as they had already secured their ticket to the postseason with a 23-0 win against Fresno State on Oct. 25.
“How many 7-1 teams are there in the country?” Lewis said. “At this point in the season, we’re not talking about preseason polls and what people think they are.
“There are only four weeks left in the regular season before hitting championship weekend. We’re focused on the present. The resume speaks for itself. I think we’re one of the best in the country.”
Meanwhile, Hawaii’s three-game winning streak came to an end with a 45-38 loss at San Jose State on Saturday night at CEFCU Stadium. The Rainbow Warriors fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2Â in Mountain West play.
The loss came after Hawaii’s magnificent 31-19 win over Colorado State on Oct. 18, and the program’s head coach, Timmy Chang, seemed energized after that win.
“These guys, they’re having success,” Chang said. “It just kind of feeds into their belief that, ‘Hey, we can do this. We got this.'”
For the upcoming game, San Diego State’s statistics show their struggles on third downs, converting just 34.3% of the time (ranked 116th nationally). Meanwhile, Hawaii’s defense allows a 36.7% conversion rate (49th nationally).
Hawaii averages 410 yards per game on offense (52nd in FBS) and gives up 358 yards per game on defense (60th in FBS). Meanwhile, SDSU averages 367.1 yards per game on offense (84th in FBS) but boasts a strong defense, allowing only 247.5 yards per game (6th in FBS).
On turnovers, Hawaii ranks 119th in FBS with a -7 margin, while Lewis’s squad is 19th with a +6 margin.
