How do Central Connecticut and UConn Match Up?

While this might not be the biggest game of the day, it brings some intrigue. These in-state schools will meet for only the second time in program history. Their first matchup came in 2022, when the Huskies won 28-3.

UConn enters the 2025 season coming off a strong 2024 campaign, finishing 9-4. The Huskies return 55% of their production from last year, including 68% on offense and 42% on defense, per ESPN.

Joe Fagnano will start at quarterback after appearing in 10 games last season, throwing for 1,631 yards, 20 touchdowns, and four interceptions. UConn also returns its leading rusher, Cam Edwards, who ran for 830 yards and eight touchdowns, and top receiver Skyler Bell, who totaled 860 yards and five touchdowns.

The Huskies are coached by Jim Mora, who has led the program since 2022 and previously served as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, UCLA Bruins, and Atlanta Falcons.

Central Connecticut, an FCS program in the Northeastern Conference, comes off a 7-6 season and was named co-champion of the conference alongside Duquesne. While the Blue Devils will likely be overmatched by their FBS opponent, they have a solid squad and could pull off an early upset in UConn’s 2025 season.

Central Connecticut is led by Adam Lechtenberg, who has been the head coach since 2023 and has served in smaller roles for Power Four programs such as Virginia Tech and TCU.

The Huskies enter this game as heavy favorites. ESPN’s matchup predictor gives UConn a 98% chance to beat Central Connecticut, and most expect the Blue Devils to struggle.

Still, if Central Connecticut pulls off an upset, it would give the program significant momentum heading into its FCS schedule as it aims to repeat as NEC champion and make a push for the FCS playoffs.

For UConn, the goal is to establish itself on the football field the way it has on the basketball court. A win over the Blue Devils would provide momentum as the Huskies head into the rest of their season.

After facing Central Connecticut, UConn takes on a Power Four opponent in Syracuse, a team it lost to by just a touchdown last season. Getting out to a 1-0 start is crucial for the Huskies.
