Louisville quarterback Miller Moss is not from your typical football family. While many athletes have parents who were players or coaches, Moss’s father is an Academy Award winner, but it’s an honor from a world far from Hollywood’s red carpets.
This unique background, rooted in architecture and intellectual pursuits, shaped the quarterback who is now tasked with leading the Cardinals.
What Kind of Academy Award Did Miller Moss’s Father Win?
Miller’s father, Eric Owen Moss, received an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1999. This prestigious award is not the Hollywood version given to actors, but is a significant honor recognizing top designers and artists in the architectural field.
His father founded Eric Owen Moss Architects in Culver City, California, and holds degrees from UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Harvard. His firm has become known for innovative projects that push design boundaries, earning him additional honors like the AIA/LA Gold Medal and the Jencks Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects.
Listen, one team and QB that went under the radar that I want to make sure gets their flowers?

Eric and his wife, Emily, both work at the same architectural firm, which created a household where design and creativity were constant topics of conversation. As a result, Miller grew up surrounded by discussions about problem-solving and project planning, skills that would later translate to the football field.
Who Is Miller Moss’s Mother?
Miller Moss’s mother, Emily Kovner Moss, brings her own impressive credentials to the family. She holds a Master of Architecture from Yale and previously taught at USC’s School of Architecture before becoming the Managing Partner and Designer at Eric Owen Moss Architects alongside her husband.
Additionally, Emily played a key role in Miller’s intellectual development, introducing him to chess at the Santa Monica Public Library when he was just three years old. She encouraged his diverse interests, from writing stories to competing in math competitions, pushing him to explore different activities.

“He just really loved the game and loved looking at the board and the strategy of it all,” Emily said about Miller’s passion for chess. That background in chess helped Miller on the football field, where he learned to read defenses and anticipate what opponents would do next.
How Did His Parents’ Background Influence His Football Career?
Both of Miller’s parents shaped his approach to challenges and preparation. That patient mindset served him well as he spent three years as a backup quarterback behind Caleb Williams at USC before finally getting his chance to start. He broke through in the 2023 Holiday Bowl against Louisville, throwing for six touchdown passes in a stunning 42-28 victory.
Following that performance, Miller started nine games for USC in 2024, completing 64.4% of his passes for 2,555 yards and 18 touchdowns before transferring to Louisville in December. In his Louisville debut against Eastern Kentucky on August 30, he completed 17 of 25 passes for 231 yards and one touchdown while adding a rushing score in a 51-17 win.
The Box Score can fool you with Miller Moss’ debut at #Louisville There’s some big throws, good timing & command of the offense!
The 2 INTs (Last 2 clips) were “fluky.” One was a tipped-pass & the other is HILARIOUS after he makes a great throw, but was juggled to the defender. pic.twitter.com/EkT58G3qgt
