Harlem Berry Admits He ‘Tried to Fake It’ Before Committing to LSU

Harlem Berry admits he feigned interest in other programs to create drama before ultimately committing to the LSU Tigers.

Harlem Berry’s journey to the LSU Tigers was not as straightforward as it once appeared. The Louisiana native, widely regarded as one of the top running backs in the 2025 class, recently acknowledged that he added a layer of drama to his recruitment, even though he had always maintained a clear preference.

Now entering his second season in Baton Rouge, Berry remains a central figure in the Tigers’ plans under new leadership, with expectations rising after a promising freshman campaign.

Harlem Berry Reveals LSU Was Always His Choice Amid Recruiting Buzz

Berry’s recruitment featured the kind of suspense often seen with elite prospects, even if the final destination never truly changed in his mind. Reflecting on that period, he admitted,

“I’m from Louisiana. I’m from New Orleans. All I knew was LSU growing up. I’m committed to LSU. When I was getting recruited, I was trying to fake it like I was going to go somewhere else, but I always wanted to come here.”

That statement highlights both the emotional pull of staying in-state and the competitive environment surrounding his decision. Berry drew strong interest from programs such as Florida and Texas. Despite that national attention, LSU ultimately secured the commitment of a player who had long envisioned himself in purple and gold.

His comments also suggest the process was not entirely straightforward from the outside. While LSU remained firmly in contention, Berry publicly maintained uncertainty, adding intrigue to a recruitment that attracted significant attention. For the Tigers, landing a player of his caliber represented a major win.

Berry’s first season in Baton Rouge offered a glimpse of his potential while setting the stage for a larger role moving forward. As a freshman in 2025, he recorded 491 rushing yards on 104 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per attempt, along with two touchdowns. His involvement grew late in the season, as he started the final six games, signaling increased trust from the coaching staff.

During the offseason, questions emerged about his future following staff changes, including the departure of head coach Brian Kelly and running backs coach Frank Wilson. However, Berry chose to remain, citing both personal ties and confidence in the program’s direction under Lane Kiffin.

“Just knowing that they wanted me back here and me wanting to stay here was something real special,” he said. Kiffin’s offensive system played a key role in that decision. Berry pointed to expanded opportunities in space and a faster tempo as factors that align with his skill set.

Physically, Berry is focused on improving endurance and maintaining size to handle the demands of the scheme. His freshman receiving totals, eight catches for 32 yards, hint at an area that could expand within this system.

As LSU reshapes its identity, Berry’s development will be closely watched, with expectations that he can emerge as a centerpiece in the Tigers’ evolving offense.
