Was Garrett Nussmeier Injured in Today’s LSU Practice?

With the season less than a month away and LSU facing Clemson in its opener, team health becomes crucial. More importantly, Nussmeier’s health takes center stage. Initially, news circulated that the LSU passer was carted off the field during practice, sending alarm bells through the fan base.

However, that concern appears unfounded. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman provided an explanation that should calm Tiger supporters significantly.

“Texted an LSU source about rumors involving a supposed Garrett Nussmeier injury; ‘Yeah, he’s fine… these people are unreal.'”

According to On3.com, Nussmeier was helped off the field during today’s closed practice, which initially caused the alarm. The situation appears to be nothing more than a false alarm, much to the relief of the coaching staff and supporters.

Why Is Nussmeier So Critical to LSU’s 2025-26 Season Success?

To say that head coach Brian Kelly and the program will heavily lean on Nussmeier represents an understatement. After a 9-4 campaign in 2024, expectations surrounding the team and Heisman hype gathered around the signal-caller heading into this year.

During his first season as a starter in Baton Rouge, Nussmeier dominated SEC passing statistics. He led the conference in attempts (525) and completions (337), accumulating 4,052 yards and 29 touchdown passes. However, his 12 interceptions also topped the Southeastern Conference, showing areas for improvement in his sophomore campaign as the starter.

The schedule ahead tests every aspect of Nussmeier’s development. LSU opens the season against Clemson in Death Valley, followed by a matchup with Florida two weeks later. Many believe the Gators could challenge for a College Football Playoff spot, making that contest crucial early in the season.

The most brutal stretch arrives when LSU faces Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and Alabama in succession. Each of those schools carries something to prove this season, meaning none of those games resembles an easy victory, and facing Clemson, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Oklahoma away from home tests the entire roster.

With Nussmeier avoiding injury, the team can focus on preparation for what lies ahead. The Tigers want a shot at the College Football Playoff, and successfully navigating their SEC schedule could help them achieve that goal, as strength of schedule factors heavily when the committee decides postseason participants.
