Syracuse made a huge recruitment win by securing five-star wide receiver Calvin Russell. However, Fran Brown’s Orange faced one of the worst pieces of news of the spring on Tuesday, as the program revealed that Russell will be sidelined indefinitely with an injury.
Fran Brown Gives an Update on Calvin Russell’s Recovery Timeline
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Russell had successful surgery on a torn Achilles. Brown didn’t reveal the nature of Russell’s injury during his weekly media availability on Wednesday, but expressed optimism about Russell’s recovery.
“We’re protecting what he’s going through right now,” Brown said. “He did have surgery this morning, so he’s good to go, and he’ll be back here tomorrow. So we’re excited about him getting back, and we’ll just start to plan his rehab already, right?
“So, I mean, you’ll see him on the field this season, just probably not at the beginning of the season. We got some time for him. He’ll pull pretty fast. So it was a little bit different from talking to the doctors and all. See how it goes. We’re excited about the opportunity to work with him in this capacity.

Russell chose Syracuse over Miami, Alabama, Florida State, Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan, and Penn State last July. He is a multi-sport athlete, as he also joined Syracuse’s basketball roster after enrolling early in January. Despite being a freshman, he was expected to play a major role for the Orange in 2026.
Russell’s injury mirrors the one that sidelined Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli for the final eight games of last season. Angeli ended the season with an 81.3 rating in the PFSN College Football QB Impact Metric, ranking 50th nationally. Considering Angeli’s lengthy recovery, Russell could potentially return around late October to early November. Brown also confirmed the timeline on Wednesday.
“A lot of times, everybody’s worried about just him in football,” Brown said. “I think that you guys will have an opportunity to see just who we are as our culture, our staff. It’s how everybody’s going to embrace him, love him, and treat him just as if he were on the field, giving us 2,000 yards coming in. So we know that time will come. It’s just a little bit of a setback, but it’s usually a minor setback for a major comeback.
“He’s a good guy, a good kid. He’s the spark of our football team, so he’ll be back tomorrow. We’re excited to get him back in town. He was killing in practice, scoring two or three times a day, just joyful to be around. One of the best, like, kids I’ve been around in a long time. His energy’s contagious, and it rubbed off on the team, so everybody’s excited that we have him on our football team, and we’re just happy he’s still here. He’ll be able to go through some stuff with us.”
Russell is the highest-rated recruit in decades for Syracuse, making him the top recruit Brown has signed since taking over the program.
