Florida State moved to 1-1 after a tough loss to a tough SMU Mustangs team, 27-24.
The Seminoles have had a brutal last two seasons and were hoping to turn it around. Instead, they took an unfortunate loss, and the sky is falling in Tallahassee. With that deflating defeat, FSU fans are livid with head coach Mike Norvell and are sick of him leading their team.
Angry Florida State Fans Shred Mike Norvell After Loss to SMU
SMU is no slouch of an opponent as the No. 19 team in the country. But that doesn’t matter to FSU fans, and coming so close to an upset is making it sting. SMU played a very sloppy game, but got away with it, with FSU fans now pointing fingers at Norvell.
“Mike Norvell now 2 for 2 in getting booed by FSU fans at home in 2026,” remarked one fan.

“Teams with a +4 TO margin went 40-1 last year. Mike Norvell is about to lose with a +4 TO Margin. Fire this man,” added one FSU fan.

Firing Norvell is easier said than done.
PREDICT THE CFB SEASON: PFN’s Free CFB Playoff Predictor
After an undefeated season in 2023, although 13-0 FSU was left out of the four-team College Football Playoff, Norvell inked a huge extension through 2031 for $84 million. The Seminoles have a huge commitment to Norvell and would have to pay about $51 million if they decide to exercise his buyout and move on from him during the season, per FOX Sports.
Fans don’t care, though. It’s not their money. Their team has been downright disappointing for two years running and isn’t looking great in 2026.
“You can whine about Norvell’s buyout if you please; I really do not care. Forget the $$$ How do you look at plenty of other programs completely flip the script with a new HC and don’t feel the urgency and desire to do it yourself ASAP,” said a Barstool Sports content creator.

Norvell’s offense didn’t turn the ball over against the Mustangs, but still drew plenty of criticism. FSU fans were so disgusted with his play-calling that they were willing to throw his name amongst the worst play-callers in Seminoles history.

“Mike Norvell just called a toss sweep to the short side of the field. This is the [expletive] you learn not to do when playing Madden. Get this [expletive] guy off my television,” said one fan.
“This is some of the most braindead offensive play-calling of all time from Mike Norvell,” said one sports content creator.

Norvell’s offense will have to find a rhythm, or a beatdown could be headed in their direction when they visit Tuscaloosa on September 19. They’ll have some time to regroup until then and get themselves right.

But their schedule isn’t kind over the next month or so. They’ll play Central Arkansas at home after Alabama, but then they play Virginia, No. 24 Louisville, and No. 7 Miami.
The schedule is unforgiving and could leave the Seminoles in a deep hole. If Florida State drops three or four of these next five games, Norvell will be a dead man walking if he hasn’t already been relieved of his duty as head coach.
It’s a critical stretch for Norvell and his squad, with the potential to make or break their season, or for Norvell, his job.
