DJ Lagway was supposed to be taking his first real snaps as Florida’s starting quarterback this week.
Instead, he’s watching from the sideline in a walking boot, nursing yet another injury that has analysts wondering if the Gators’Â most important player can stay healthy when it matters most.
Why Is DJ Lagway’s Latest Injury So Concerning to College Football Analysts?
Florida quarterback DJ Lagway has again become a central topic in college football discussions, not for his on-field performance, but due to injury concerns that continue to follow him into another preseason. The Gators’ highly touted quarterback was recently seen in a walking boot, a development confirmed to be related to a mid to lower-grade calf strain.
The injury, which reportedly occurred during a routine team run, adds to an unsettling pattern that analysts question whether Lagway’s body can withstand the grind of an SEC season.
“This comes off of the spring of Lagway missing due to a shoulder injury,” analyst Blake Ruffino pointed out. He noted, “There have been struggles with him trying to push the ball down the field this summer.”
The latest setback intensifies concern, not just about his immediate readiness but a broader pattern. “There’s two things that we have to acknowledge here. One, it really sucks for this offense… and two, I hate to say this, but I’m starting to feel uncomfortable.”
Though the current injury is considered minor, its timing creates major problems for Florida’s offense. “The very beginning of practice is the most important period because you’re learning new wrinkles in the offense,” said DeLeone. “That is the healthiest that everyone is going to be during the entire season.”
Missing this crucial stage not only limits Lagway’s growth in the system but also raises the stakes for his return.
What Does This Pattern Mean for Lagway’s Future?
Ruffino expressed hesitation to label the quarterback as injury-prone but admitted, “I don’t want to declare him as injury-prone… but are we just going to do this every offseason?”
He referenced Lagway’s previous ailments, including a hamstring pull during the 2024-25 season, a shoulder issue in the spring, and now the calf strain, calling it, “This is the third injury that we have on him because you got to remember he pulled his hamstring during the season.
He continued, “The question becomes if he does get hurt again during the season — God forbid he misses a game — then I think you got to go there.”
Still, both analysts were cautious not to overreact. “We’re talking about stuff that’s recoverable,” DeLeone said. “We’re not talking about a guy that’s had a torn ACL or a blown rotator cuff.”
Ruffino added, “It’s a calf strain. I saw Will Campbell in a boot last season. He didn’t give up a pressure for seven weeks.”
The bigger concern may be the implications if Lagway is forced to miss significant game time. Florida’s early schedule includes matchups against South Florida and then LSU in Baton Rouge.
“What if DJ Lagway is back in week three and he’s got to go into Death Valley on a team that I know for a fact wants revenge?” Ruffino said.
In that scenario, Florida’s margin for error shrinks quickly. For now, the Gators can only wait and monitor Lagway’s recovery, hoping that this injury is a short-term setback rather than a sign of things to come.
