Florida Gators fans are holding their breath, anxiously waiting to learn if star quarterback DJ Lagway will be healthy enough to take the field for the team’s season opener.
An injury has hampered Lagway throughout most of fall camp, casting doubt on his availability for the August 30 game against Long Island University. The situation has left many wondering if the team’s most important player will be ready to go when the season kicks off.
How Close Is Florida QB DJ Lagway to a Full Recovery?
However, recent reports have delivered encouraging news for Gator Nation. Sources close to the program indicate that Lagway is making significant progress and is nearing a full return to action.
“The arm is great,” a source said via On3. “I would say close to 100 percent. Certainly not far. Not far at all. His arm is actually great. I’m not going to say a percentage, but I would say it’s certainly close to being better than before. We told everyone all along we have a plan. We’ve been sticking to that plan.”
In a positive development, the quarterback has steadily increased his workload in practice. He recently participated in full 11-on-11 team drills for the first time since the beginning of training camp, a significant step in his recovery.
The injury occurred in July when Lagway hurt his calf while running with teammates. This unfortunate setback occurred just before fall camp started. As a result, he was initially seen in a walking boot and missed the first several days of full practice sessions.

This latest issue, unfortunately, adds to a concerning history of injuries. Lagway was also sidelined for most of spring practice with a shoulder injury and underwent sports hernia surgery during the offseason.
Despite these health concerns, Lagway’s performance during the 2024 season gives fans plenty of reason for optimism. The former five-star recruit made an immediate impact as a true freshman, starting seven games and leading the Gators to a 6-1 record in those contests. His only defeat came against Georgia, a game he left early with a hamstring injury.
His breakout performance came in his first collegiate start against Samford, where he threw for a record-breaking 456 yards. Lagway recorded 1,915 passing yards and 12 touchdowns for the season, completing 59.9% of his passes.

The young quarterback also demonstrated his ability to perform in high-pressure situations, leading Florida to upset wins over ranked opponents LSU and Ole Miss at home.
Lagway concluded his impressive rookie year by earning MVP honors in Florida’s 33-8 Gasparilla Bowl victory over Tulane.
Head coach Billy Napier remains optimistic about Lagway’s recovery timeline. Napier has stated that the quarterback is “on schedule” and noted that his recent practice performances have been his best yet.
With just over a week remaining until kickoff, all signs seem to indicate that Lagway will be prepared to lead the Gators into the new season.
