In the age of multi-million-dollar NIL deals, a massive paydat seems to play the most important role in college football recruiting. It’s commonplace at this point for a program that offers the highest NIL deal to win a player recruitment.
However, that is not the case for 2026 four-star defensive lineman JaReylan McCoy, who recently committed to the Florida Gators, despite reportedly having a bigger offer from another program. McCoy’s decision highlights how relationships can still triumph over financial incentives in the modern recruiting landscape.
Elite 2026 Mississippi Defensive Lineman Prospect Breaks Down Decision to Commit to Florida
JaReylan McCoy is a highly-rated recruit from Tupelo, Mississippi, with rankings that vary significantly across services. ESPN lists him as a five-star prospect and the No. 9 overall player nationally, while On3 ranks him as the 17th-best defensive lineman and 163rd-best player in the 2026 class.
He announced his decision to commit to the Florida Gators on June 14 over other high-powered programs, including LSU and Texas.

This was a big-time recruiting win for the Gators as McCoy represents their highest-rated commit in the 2026 cycle according to ESPN. At 6’7″ and 245 pounds, McCoy is a monster who projects as either an interior defensive lineman or edge rusher and will undoubtedly make an impact for head coach Billy Napier’s team when he arrives on campus.
McCoy detailed his decision to choose Florida in a recent interview with On3’s Nick Schultz. He explained that he chose the Gators despite having a higher NIL offer from another program.
“People think that Florida offered me the highest number. Florida didn’t even offer me the highest number,” McCoy told Schultz. “Somebody offered me a higher number. It wasn’t even about the money. If you do good your couple years there, the money’s gonna be there.”
McCoy went on to explain that while money is important, it wasn’t the most significant factor in his commitment, and that the staff and players at Florida were the main reason he chose the Gators.
“It wasn’t even based off just money. It was based off relationships. I’ve got to be there for three years. I want somewhere I can go and be comfortable,” McCoy told Schultz. “That’s really what it’s based off of [sic], the relationships.”
The defensive lineman’s journey to Florida included a previous commitment to LSU in January before reopening his recruitment in February. His decision represents a major victory for Florida’s recruiting efforts, as McCoy had recorded more than 140 tackles and 18.5 sacks in three varsity seasons at Tupelo High School.
McCoy’s philosophy behind choosing Florida seems to be a lost one in today’s college football world. For a player of McCoy’s status, choosing a school based on relationships should help him have a successful and fulfilling college career.
His commitment marks Florida’s first five-star addition since quarterback D.J. Lagway and pass rusher L.J. McCray in the 2024 class.
In a world where it seems like the only thing that matters is a check, McCoy is proving that the heartbeat of college football recruitment is still the people and the program culture rather than purely financial considerations.
