EDGE LaDamion Guyton commands attention as one of the nation’s top 2027 recruits, but Texas Tech’s bold financial strategy is reshaping how college football’s biggest names get recruited.
The Red Raiders aren’t just chasing elite talent — they’re openly discussing their plan to outbid established programs for the players everyone wants.
How Is Texas Tech Positioning Itself to Land 2027 EDGE LaDamion Guyton?
Texas Tech’s aggressive approach under head coach Joey McGuire is starting to reshape the national recruiting landscape. McGuire’s long-term vision has centered on unifying donors, administrators, and staff to push the Red Raiders toward national prominence.
“Be a perennial Top 10 in the country,” said General Manager James Blanchard. “Be a playoff contender every year and dominate the Big 12 every year.”

The momentum is building after Texas Tech beat out Texas for five-star tackle Felix Ojo and now challenges Georgia for Guyton. National insiders are taking note of the shift.
“Texas Tech is trending,” said Steve Wiltfong, who placed a Rivals prediction in the Red Raiders’ favor.
That commitment is now turning into results. Texas Tech’s 2026 class already holds 19 pledges and features recent blue-chip wins like Ojo and four-star wideout Chase Campbell, lifting their Rivals ranking to No. 25 nationally.
However, it’s Blanchard’s candid comments about their NIL strategy that grabbed headlines this week.
“We’re going to poach some guys,” Blanchard said Tuesday during the Personnel Symposium in Nashville. “I’m going to do senior evals on the 2026 class across the country, and if somebody is underpaying an elite guy that has senior tape, he might be a four- or five-star guy, and people are only paying him 100, 200 thousand.”
He continued, “I’m going to give him three to 400 thousand and go steal somebody,” emphasizing that Texas Tech’s rise stems from full institutional alignment between all parties involved. “Resource-rich university. A group of people that are motivated to see if they can turn Texas Tech into a new-age blue blood.”
When Will Guyton Announce His Decision?
Guyton will reveal his college choice Thursday, August 7, at the Benedictine Military School (GA) gymnasium, his school confirmed Tuesday.

Guyton, a native of Savannah, Georgia, moved from Savannah Christian to Benedictine during the offseason, seeking tougher competition to prepare for the next level.
“It was a tough decision to transfer, and there were a lot of personal factors involved,” he told the Savannah Morning News. “But the main thing was, I think playing at Benedictine will open up opportunities for me by going against better competition.”
Georgia was widely viewed as the frontrunner throughout this process, but Texas Tech has rapidly closed the gap. Rivals analysts Ben Golan and Sam Spiegelman have forecasted Guyton to the Red Raiders, suggesting the momentum has shifted significantly.
If Texas Tech secures Guyton, it would mark their second major five-star win of the summer after landing Ojo, who signed a revenue-sharing deal reportedly worth up to $1.5 million annually.
The Red Raiders would also position themselves well for other elite targets, including Rivals’ No. 1 quarterback Kavian Bryant, who lists Texas Tech and Texas in his top two, and Rivals Industry five-star offensive tackle Cooper Hackett.
Guyton would represent the cornerstone of what could become a historic recruiting class for Texas Tech, marking the first in a potentially elite group that could reshape the program’s future.
