Anyone can pick Alabama or Georgia and win championships. The real test of a dynasty mode coach is taking a program that’s never seen success and building something special from the ground up. College football video games have brought back that rebuild magic, and some programs are begging for a complete transformation.
What Makes These Seven Programs Perfect Rebuild Targets?
Based on Scott Fisher’s comprehensive analysis in his recent video breakdown, these programs represent the most fascinating rebuild opportunities in the new college football game.
As Fisher noted, “With the team builder feature, you can pretty much bring any idea to life,” making even the most challenging rebuilds possible.
Why Is Missouri State the Hidden Gem?
The Missouri State Bears present one of the most intriguing rebuilds, having recently made the leap to FBS football with Conference USA membership. Located in Springfield, Missouri, the Bears play at Robert W. Plaster Stadium, a 17,500-seat facility that underwent significant renovations in 2014.
Scott Fisher said in his video, “Springfield, Missouri is sort of a gem and I think in time Missouri State could definitely explode into a pretty unique program.” Under third-year head coach Ryan Beard, the Bears have established an infrastructure but face the challenge of competing at the highest level of college football.

Their central location provides recruiting channels to Texas, Oklahoma, and the Southeast. Plus, their unique color scheme and history, along with successful coaches such as Bobby Petrino, make this rebuild particularly interesting.
What Makes Old Dominion a Sleeping Giant?
Old Dominion represents Norfolk, Virginia’s classic sleeping giant. The Monarchs play at Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium, which seats 21,944 and can expand to 30,000. The $67.5 million renovation finished in 2019Â created one of the top mid-major facilities in the country.
Head coach Ricky Rahne enters his sixth season with proven development credentials. In 2024, ODU led the Sun Belt Conference in rushing offense and red zone efficiency, ranking first nationally with a 95% red zone scoring rate.
Fisher emphasized their potential, stating, “The Old Dominion Monarchs are a sleeping giant in college football… they would be a lot of fun to rebuild, and their ceiling would ultimately be in the ACC.”
Why Is Eastern Michigan the Ultimate Challenge?
Eastern Michigan presents perhaps the most challenging rebuild, as one of only 19 teams never to achieve a national ranking. The Eagles play at Rynearson Stadium, nicknamed “The Factory,” which seats 30,200 and features unique gray FieldTurf, making it only the second FBS program to play on non-green turf.
Chris Creighton enters his 11th season with a remarkable track record, leading EMU to six bowl games. Fisher noted the unique challenges: “There are a couple reasons why it is difficult to win at Eastern Michigan, as they’re located just under an hour from Ann Arbor… That’s why it’ll be much easier for Eastern Michigan to see success in a video game where stuff like that doesn’t really matter.”
What About These Other Rebuild Opportunities?
Beyond the top three, several other programs offer unique rebuilding experiences:
Kennesaw State Owls
Kennesaw State offers a fascinating rebuild following significant program changes. The Owls recently hired Jerry Mack as head coach after finishing 2-10 in their first FBS season. Located in metro Atlanta, KSU sits in premier recruiting territory with unlimited potential for roster building.
Fifth Third Stadium currently seats 10,200 but offers expansion capabilities and modern amenities. As Fisher explained, “They would need a lot of improvements, especially with their stadium and facilities. But that is much easier to do in a video game than in real life.”
Idaho Vandals
Idaho offers one of college football’s most distinctive rebuilding challenges, playing in the iconic Kibbie Dome. The P1FCU Kibbie Dome seats 16,000 and represents college football’s most unique venue, with goal posts attached to walls behind end zones and a sunken field below ground level.
Thomas Ford Jr. returns as head coach after developing NFL-bound talent like Anthony Woods and notable teams players. Fisher noted their unique situation: “While they do play in one of the most iconic stadiums in college football in the Kibby Dome, it proved quite difficult to win at Idaho… And like all these teams, it’d be much easier to do in a video game.”
Kent State Golden Flashes
Kent State represents the ultimate rebuilding challenge, making success incredibly rewarding. The Golden Flashes play at Dix Stadium, which seats 27,000, and compete in the Mid-American Conference, where competitive balance provides realistic championship pathways.
Recent coaching changes offer fresh starts for cultural transformation. Fisher emphasized the challenge: “The Golden Flashes probably have the worst culture, the worst NIL fund, the worst talent and they play in one of the worst areas. They scream college football rebuild.”
Whether you’re building a powerhouse from the ashes or rewriting a forgotten program’s legacy, these rebuilds aren’t just games. They’re your shot at legend.
