Nick Saban played a big role in building Alabama into a dominant dynasty for many years, and he also became a strong supporter of Donald Trump’s push to reform college sports. Saban attended a college athletics roundtable at the White House on Friday, where the discussion focused on addressing the rapidly evolving landscape of collegiate athletics.
Ex-USC Star Criticizes Nick Saban for NIL Remarks at White House
During the White House discussion, Nick Saban urged lawmakers to address issues he believes are hurting college athletics, particularly how NIL deals have shifted attention away from education. His comments earned him jabs from several figures in the sports world, including former USC safety Su’a Kristopher Cravens.
“The hypocrisy coming from Coach Saban is so damn ridiculous it’s sad to see him try to push this agenda smh … Yal don’t care about these kids in the slightest, yal only care about that money and who gets to benefit from it. Plain as day what’s happening here,” Cravens tweeted.
Saban had already seen the shifting landscape coming when he retired from Alabama in 2024, as the program struggled to navigate the new era of NIL and revenue sharing. Even Donald Trump said the rapidly evolving NIL environment may have quietly played a role in Saban’s decision to step away from coaching.
Saban didn’t directly address that claim, but strongly criticized the current system during Friday’s discussion. He said many student-athletes now make decisions primarily based on financial opportunities rather than long-term value and development.

“I think we need to come up with a system, obviously have to do it with the President’s leadership and also with Congress probably, whether it’s antitrust legislation or whatever it is, to allow student athletes in all sports, including women’s and Olympic sports, to enhance their quality of life while going to college, but still provide opportunity to advance themselves beyond their athletic career,” Saban said.
“How much does anybody talk about getting an education anymore? Nobody talks about it at all, which is the most important thing any of these student athletes can do in terms of enhancing their future.”
Saban hasn’t opposed NIL entirely, as he has emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance that prioritizes player development and education. However, many pointed out that he didn’t address the issue of coaches’ loyalty.

High-profile head coaches are now also changing programs for more lucrative contracts, meaning players shouldn’t be blamed solely for chasing better opportunities.
Meanwhile, President Trump indicated that he hopes to move college athletics back toward a system closer to the pre-NIL era, before NIL deals and the transfer portal dramatically reshaped the sport. He reportedly announced that he plans to issue an executive order by the end of next week.
