Julian Walker, a towering 6-6 edge rusher from Columbia and the On300 standout, will have to make a big decision for himself soon. Walker is currently torn between family ties and the future of his career. With his father, Jamil Walker, who is a strength and conditioning coach at South Carolina, giving him advice and standing on his side, Julian’s choice will carry a lot of weight.
The 2026 prospect has emerged as one of the nation’s most coveted pass rushers after transferring to Dutch Fork High School. His meteoric rise through the rankings culminated in debuting at No. 136 in the On300, a jump that caught even Walker himself by surprise. At 6’6″ and 230 pounds with exceptional length, he possesses the prototypical frame that college coaches covet for edge rushing.
Gamecocks Roots or Michigan Future? Julian Walker Has to Make the Hard Choice
Jamil, a former Wisconsin player and coach, has spent the last two years with South Carolina, where Julian was coached and blossomed into the nation’s No. 136 recruit.
The timing isn’t coincidental – Jamil joined the Gamecocks’ strength staff in June 2023 after a successful three-year stint as Arkansas’ Director of Strength and Conditioning. His coaching resume includes stops at Georgia, Wisconsin, and, most recently, helping transform Arkansas into one of the SEC’s most physical teams.
Multiple offers from powerhouses like Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, and Syracuse have poured in for the young athlete, but making the decision isn’t that simple for him. The family dynamics add complexity to what’s already a career-defining choice.
“It’s hard for me not to wear my South Carolina hat at all times,” Jamil admitted. “But I’m trying to love up on him as much as I can, and I trust his heart.”
Michigan is making a major move in 4⭐️ EDGE Julian Walker’s recruitment. His father, a South Carolina strength coach, raved about the OV
“I’ve been in this business almost 20-22 years, playing and coaching, and I hadn’t really seen anything like that”

Despite the Gamecocks’ pull of roots, Michigan has emerged as a very promising landing spot for the player. The Wolverines, under head coach Sherrone Moore, have hosted Julian twice, including a standout Victors Weekend official visit.
Michigan’s recent success developing edge rushers like Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant, both first-round NFL draft picks in 2025, provides a compelling blueprint for Walker’s potential development.
Their relentless pursuit, led by defensive line coach Lou Esposito, has left a lasting impression. Esposito, hired in March 2024 from Western Michigan, brings 21 years of collegiate coaching experience and a proven track record of developing NFL-caliber talent. “They set the tone early, like ‘We don’t care about anybody else,'” Jamil said, praising Michigan’s fearless approach despite South Carolina’s emotional corner.
Michigan’s Program Leaves Father “Blown Away”
Jamil, with over two decades in football, was floored by Michigan’s program. “I’ve been blown away,” he said. “Their standard is out of this world. You’re really at a loss for words.” From Ann Arbor’s in-depth approach to player development to its life-preparation ethos, the Wolverines have struck the right chords with the young prospect’s parents.
Julian’s uncle, Josh Neal, a former Wisconsin Badger, joined the family on visits. “What was more impressive was finding out what a Michigan man is,” Jamil said. “I hadn’t seen anything like that.” The family’s Wisconsin connections run deep – Jamil played for the Badgers and later served as an assistant strength coach there from 2009-2017 before moving to Georgia and eventually Arkansas.
Jamil described their approach as “refreshing,” noting that the staff’s honesty and resources surpassed their expectations. Michigan’s emphasis on developing complete student-athletes resonates with a family that values both athletic and academic excellence. The Wolverines’ focus on Julian’s potential as a disruptive edge rusher has kept them in pole position as his commitment timeline moves forward.
Walker’s production at Dutch Fork has been impressive, helping lead the Silver Foxes to a state championship while recording 9.5 sacks as a junior. His combination of size, length, and athleticism makes him a natural fit for Michigan’s 3-4 defensive scheme that has consistently produced NFL edge rushers.
In the end, even though Julian’s connection to South Carolina runs deep, Michigan may be the better choice for his career development. Julian initially planned to decide closer to signing day, but has since expedited his timeline. He’ll announce a Top 3 soon and commit by his first or second game, with Michigan likely his final official visit.
For a player with Julian’s talent and Michigan’s track record of edge rusher development, the Wolverines present an opportunity that’s hard to ignore, even for a South Carolina strength coach’s son.
