Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was one of the best performers at the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis last month. Allar’s draft stock took a dip when the former Nittany Lions star sustained a broken ankle in a game against the Northwestern Wildcats on Oct. 11, ending his college football season after just six games.
Penn State QB Drew Allar Faces Tough Evaluation After Todd McShay Highlights Accuracy Problem
In a draft class headlined by former Indiana Hoosiers star Fernando Mendoza, but light on quarterback talent, Allar has been predicted in several mock drafts to be a day three selection.
Start with inability to throw accurately to targets moving away from him. Almost as if it’s a visualization issue. It’s the damnedest thing. But it’s real. And yes, highly frustrating because he has so many things you want in a QB. https://t.co/d4dGWXI2D9

On Friday, analyst Todd McShay quote-tweeted a clip on X from NFL Draft analyst Greg Cosell, highlighting Allar’s greatest weaknesses, despite his very obvious talent and desirable traits as a quarterback that would appeal to NFL teams.
“Start with inability to throw accurately to targets moving away from him. Almost as if it’s a visualization issue. It’s the damnedest thing. But it’s real. And yes, highly frustrating because he has so many things you want in a QB,” McShay tweeted.
After joining the Nittany Lions as a four-star prospect in the class of 2022, Allar served as a backup before taking the Penn State QB1 job and becoming a three-year starter in Happy Valley, and leading his team to the College Football Playoff in 2024.
In his latest column ranking the best quarterbacks in the class of 2026, ESPN draft guru Jordan Reid listed Allar at No. 5 and broke down why he was such a desirable prospect to NFL teams.
“Evaluators were very complimentary of Allar’s performance at the combine in his first post-injury action. The arm strength was easy to see, as the ball came out of his hand with plenty of energy behind it. His accuracy improved as the session progressed,” Reid wrote. “I absolutely love that he came out and competed at the combine,” an AFC area scout said.

“He’s been a bit of a mystery since the ankle injury, but I’m glad that he came out and proved that he was on the road to being back healthy. NFL franchises fall in love with physical tools. In what is a jumbled-up group of QBs in Rounds 3 and 4, Allar has far and away the best physical traits of the bunch, but his accuracy has yet to improve.”
In six games played for the Nittany Lions last season, Allar tallied 1,100 passing yards, resulting in 8 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, while adding 172 rushing yards and 1 score to earn a PFSN College QB Impact score of 78.7.
