What Will Darius Gray’s Decision Mean for South Carolina and LSU?

Speculation has reached a fever pitch as Gray, one of the top-rated offensive linemen in the 2026 recruiting class, prepares to commit to college. He locked in August 22 for his big announcement, stirring up excitement in the South and beyond.

According to numerous recruiting insiders, South Carolina and LSU stand above the rest for Gray’s pledge. While Gray has not made anything official, most believe the Gamecocks have the edge, largely thanks to building strong relationships with Gray throughout his recruitment.

Gray announced his final decision date on July 26, narrowing his list to South Carolina, LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, and Tennessee. Still, all eyes focus on South Carolina and LSU as front-runners in the race. The tension for both fan bases keeps mounting as the commitment draws closer.

Gray has visited South Carolina more than any other school. He has made more than 10 trips to Columbia, highlighted by an official visit in June that overlapped with several key Gamecock commitments. During that visit, Gray spent time with pledges J’Zavien Currence, Jamel Howse, and Sequel Patterson. Four-star quarterback Landon Duckworth, another South Carolina commit, was also present for an unofficial visit during that same period.

LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, and Tennessee are still hanging around, with Ohio State having recruited Gray for over a year. But the conversation always seems to circle back to South Carolina. As one fan put it:

“He’s a Gamecock. Bookmark it.”

“Cock,” another remarked.

“Gamecock nation is calling young man,” a fan quipped.

“Go cockssssssss cmon man!!!,” another quipped.

How Would Gray’s Commitment Shape South Carolina’s 2026 Class?

South Carolina’s 2026 class has already drawn attention with 13 verbal commitments and a current No. 29 ranking nationally in the 247Sports consensus. The program’s offensive line haul includes four-star tackle Kamari Blair, four-star interior lineman Zyon Guiles, and in-state talent Anthony Baxter, the group’s earliest commitment.

Gray talked up the Gamecocks’ steady approach in a recent interview with On SI, saying,

“They have been the longest relationship possible,” Gray said. “I think the most important thing to me is how everyone remained the same. You know, way back, they were a five or six-win team, and now they are scratching the surface for playoffs, and not once did they change anything that they are doing with their culture, so I think that’s been the biggest thing for me, and Coach Beamer is an amazing person that you’d want to play for.”

Standing 6’3” and weighing 285 pounds, Gray is ranked as the top interior offensive lineman in his class by the Rivals Industry Ranking. He checks in at No. 29 nationally and as the No. 1 overall recruit from Virginia.

The St. Christopher’s School standout in Richmond does not just dominate in football. He is also a force on the basketball court, picking up State Prep Player of the Year honors for football and basketball last year.
