Dabo Swinney walked into Tuesday’s media session with a completely different energy. The jokes were flowing, the stories were coming naturally, and for the first time in years, Clemson’s head coach looked genuinely relaxed. After a challenging spring that saw multiple starters recovering from surgeries, Swinney found himself in an unexpectedly good mood. The reason? His coaching staff has never been stronger.
What Makes Dabo Swinney’s 2025 Coaching Staff So Different?
Most media sessions turn into predictable coach-speak performances. However, this time was different for Swinney. The football world took notice immediately. Clemson analyst Grayson Mann captured it perfectly on the “TigerNet” podcast.
“That’s as relaxed as I’ve seen Dabo probably in my, this is going to be my fourth full season doing this. I’ve never seen him like that. He was cracking jokes, telling stories. My man was up there, and it might as well have been a comedy show,” said Mann.
Analyst David Hood, who was also present during the conversation, explained the reason behind this transformation.
“We talked to a lot of guys today, and one thing that I kept bringing up was, this is almost like an all-star coaching staff,” Hood said. “You go, ‘Holy smokes, there’s some pretty good coaches over here.'”
Hood’s assessment rings true. Swinney’s 2025 staff brings serious credentials to Death Valley. The offense is led by Broyles Award winner Garrett Riley, while Matt Luke, who won a national title at Georgia, guides the offensive line. Tom Allen brings Big Ten Coach of the Year credentials to the defensive side. Mike Houston adds an FCS national title from James Madison to the mix.
The depth doesn’t stop there. “You look at Lorenzo Ward, ‘Whammy,’ who’s now kind of like Dabo’s assistant head coach, I think that’s really his title, but he is Dabo’s eyes and ears for the defense,” Hood added. “That’s just the beginning.”
How Does Swinney’s Hiring Philosophy Connect to Clemson’s Culture?
Beyond the impressive resumes, Swinney has made strategic hires who understand Clemson’s unique culture. Detroit Lions veteran John Scott Jr. brings NFL experience and recruiting connections.
“He basically recruited all the guys at Penn State that Tom Allen coached last year. He had T.J. Parker committed to Penn State before T.J. flipped to Clemson,” Hood noted.
Additionally, Swinney has brought back returning Tigers coaches like Brandon Thomas and former NFL player Da’Quan Bowers, who simply bleed orange. These moves show an intentionality in Swinney’s staffing approach.
“We’re in a lot better spot than we were.”

The family connections run deep as well. Thomas Allen, son of Tom Allen, serves as another example. Once a linebacker under his father at Indiana, he now helps mentor linebackers in Death Valley. Brandon Thomas, drafted by the 49ers in 2014, played in the NFL and has returned home to contribute to the program.

When Swinney walked into Media Day full of jokes and confidence, it reflected the energy of a coach who finally feels the “house is in order.” This confident demeanor stems from having assembled a staff of mentors, builders, and believers in the Clemson mission.
The Tigers’ 2025 story hasn’t been written yet. However, if Media Day served as any indication, it’ll be one worth watching.
With young players ready to step up after a spring that saw several starters recovering from surgeries, Swinney’s relaxed confidence suggests Clemson is quietly preparing for what could be a great season.
