Cutter Boley Details ‘Closest’ QB Room As Arizona State Starter Race Heats Up

Arizona State quarterback Cutter Boley arrived in Tempe as a marquee transfer from Kentucky, tasked with leading the Sun Devils into a new era. Boley is viewed as a foundational piece for Kenny Dillingham’s program as they look to build upon an 8-5 finish in 2025, a season that saw ASU finish sixth in its inaugural Big 12 campaign.

Boley enters the 2026 season with significant momentum after a 2025 campaign at Kentucky where he threw for 2,160 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 220 pounds, the redshirt sophomore provides the physical prototype Dillingham has prioritized since taking over the program, offering a high-ceiling vertical threat for the Sun Devils’ evolving offense.

Cutter Boley Shares Insight on Arizona State’s United Quarterback Group

Boley is currently embroiled in a high-stakes competition with three other signal-callers: veteran Mikey Keene, redshirt freshman Cameron Dyer, and incoming four-star freshman Jake Fette. Following Arizona State’s final spring practice on Tuesday, April 21, Boley spoke candidly about the chemistry within the room despite the pressure of the QB1 battle.

“It’s awesome,” Boley said. “This is like the closest QB room I’ve been a part of in terms of just hanging out outside of football and just being around each other. All three of these guys are awesome dudes… All three have really different personalities, and we’re all kind of from different places.”

The quarterback room has undergone a massive transition following the departure of 2025 starter Sam Leavitt, who transferred to LSU in January after being ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the portal. While Dillingham has not announced a firm timeline for naming a starter, Boley is widely considered the frontrunner to take the field for the season opener against Morgan State on Sept. 5.

The winner of the battle will inherit a revamped arsenal of playmakers, headlined by Colorado transfer Omarion Miller. Miller, an All-Big 12 Second-Team selection who recorded 808 receiving yards and eight touchdowns for the Buffaloes last year, became the highest-rated transfer recruit in ASU history upon his commitment. Analysts suggest Miller could lead the conference in receiving if the Sun Devils find consistency under center.

Boley expressed high confidence in the depth of the 2026 roster heading into the summer months. “I feel like we have weapons all over the place,” Boley noted. “We got weapons in the backfield, receiver room, tight end, everywhere. When you can attack people from multiple different directions, that’s going to be a great strength for us.”

Boley finished the 2025 season with a 76.1 score in the PFSN College Football QB Impact Metric, ranking No. 102 nationally. As Arizona State prepares for its second season in the Big 12, Boley’s development remains the primary storyline for a program looking to vault into the national top 25.
