Fernando Mendoza has already been making headlines after leading Indiana to a dominant 56-22 win over Oregon in the Peach Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The 2025 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback is recognized for his poise and ability to deliver in high-pressure moments.
Besides his on-field excellence, Mendoza is also known as a team-first leader who regularly attributes his success to the efforts of his teammates and coaches.
Curt Cignetti Shares Rare Insight Into Fernando Mendoza Beyond the Podium
Indiana will head into the CFP national championship matchup against No. 10 Miami with a perfect 15-0 record this season. During his media availability ahead of the title game, Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti fielded questions and was asked about Mendoza’s communication within the program and his working relationship with him.
Cignetti said that Indiana quarterbacks coach Chandler Whitmer and strength and conditioning coach Derek Owings interact with Mendoza on a daily basis far more than he does.
“He is highly, highly respected in the locker room,” Cignetti said about Mendoza. “And the way he’s played speaks for itself. I thought he was excellent against Oregon. Ever since the Heisman Trophy, he’s upped his level of play. He’s a special guy. He’s extremely intelligent, and people recognize that. And he says the right things, and he’ll be really successful one day when football ends, whatever he chooses to do.
“He’s got a great relationship with the guys, and it’s mainly the older guys, obviously. Those guys hang together. But I think what he’s done behind the scenes to bring the offensive unit even closer together — and those are a lot of things that I’m not aware of at the time, I find out later. He’s just done a tremendous job. In every single area where you could impact team success, he’s been front and center.”
While the 2024 Indiana squad has pushed the program forward, Mendoza has been phenomenal in lifting it to the very top. In the playoff, the No. 2 quarterback in the PFSN College Football QB Impact Score has recorded more touchdowns (eight) than incompletions (five).
Mendoza passed for 177 yards and five touchdowns against Oregon. After the win, Cignetti even likened his quarterback to seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady in postseason play.
Besides Mendoza’s production on the field and leadership in the locker room, Cignetti is also impressed by the quarterback’s maturity and how he conducts himself and communicates.
“You know, when I talk to him, the conversations are usually pretty short,” Cignetti said. “He doesn’t say a lot in the building or on the practice field. He’s not a vocal guy. Where I think, get a full taste of Fernando Mendoza is during the interview process, whether it’s during the week or after the game. And it’s always an A-plus interview.”
Mendoza went viral earlier in the postseason following the Big Ten Championship win over Ohio State. In an emotional postgame interview, he exclaimed, “Whoever thought the Hoosiers would be here? But now the Hoosiers are champs – let’s go!”
After the 38-3 Rose Bowl win over Alabama, Mendoza’s comments again gained attention for their humility.
