Monday was intended to mark a positive beginning to Colorado’s spring football training schedule. With a mix of new and returning players, the coaching staff welcomed the roster.
For new offensive coordinator Brennan Marion, however, the day required addressing a recent development that affected the team in a deeply personal way.

During media availability, Marion, in his first season at Colorado, spoke about the death of Ponder. The 23-year-old sophomore died in a one-car accident in Boulder. Marion offered his thoughts at the microphone, fighting back tears.
“I couldn’t move,” Marion said. “I was speechless talking to Dom’s dad. … We’ll save a spot for him in the room.”

According to reports, Ponder lost control of his car on a curve while traveling down Baseline Road. His vehicle struck an electric pole and a guardrail before sliding down an embankment. Police confirmed that Ponder’s westbound car crossed into eastbound traffic, hit the rail, struck the pole, and rolled. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Head coach Deion Sanders shared his thoughts on his player’s death.
“God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones. Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let’s pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us.”
Ponder began his football career at Bethune-Cookman (FCS/SWAC). The Opa-Locka, Fla., native transferred to Colorado after the 2023 season. He redshirted in 2024 and appeared in two games for the Buffaloes last season.
Although he left Bethune-Cookman three years ago, the university expressed its sadness on social media, honoring its former student-athlete. Teammates and others have also shared condolences across platforms.
Following the news, Sanders gave his team the option to skip Monday’s practice. The players, however, chose to take the field in Ponder’s honor. According to the Associated Press, the team practiced while chanting “Dom” in tribute to their late teammate.
With the graduation of former starter Kaidon Salter and the transfer of quarterback Ryan Staub, Ponder was listed second on the depth chart behind presumptive starter sophomore Julian Lewis. Utah transfer Isaac Wilson and Colton Allen round out the Colorado quarterback room.
