Fans often feel like halftime in college football drags on compared to the NFL, but there’s a reason behind the more extended break. Here’s what you need to know about how long halftime lasts.
How Long Is Halftime in College Football Games?
A lot of fans wonder how long halftime really is. One recent fan’s tweet showcases that exact curiosity, when they asked, “How long is halftime in college football?” on X.
The NCAA sets college football halftime to no less than 20 minutes, unless both teams agree to shorten it, IndyStar cites the NCAA rule book stating:
“The intermission between halves of a regular-season game shall be 20 minutes, unless shortened before the game by mutual agreement of the administrations of both schools. Immediately after the second period ends, the referee should begin the intermission by signaling to start the game clock.”
The extended halftime is designed to allow teams to regroup with their coaches before the second half of the game. It also allows coaches to make adjustments and reevaluate who they will take on the field in the second half.
College football teams are allowed up to 105 players on their roster, which is significantly more than the NFL’s 53-player rosters, meaning coaches have more decisions to make during the break.
In addition, halftime allows time for marching band performances, which are an integral part of the overall college football game-day experience. One example of this is when Florida State’s Marching Chiefs delivered a tribute to the legendary Lee Corso, which created a very memorable halftime.
For fans at home, the stoppage provides a window for commercial breaks and studio analysis.
How College Football Halftime Compares to an NFL Halftime
An NFL halftime typically lasts 12 minutes, which is almost half the length of a college football halftime. The only major exception is the Super Bowl, where halftime increases to 20 to 30 minutes long to allow for the halftime show.
The Super Bowl halftime show has become big business, with Grammy award winner Bad Bunny set to take the stage in the upcoming Super Bowl 60 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
That’s expanded to other big NFL games, such as the ones held on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Recently, the league announced the halftime performers for the 2025 Thanksgiving games, which include Post Malone and Lil Jon.
The NFL announced that Jack White, Post Malone and Lil Jon will each be headlining their own respective halftime shows at games in Detroit, Dallas and Baltimore on Nov. 27. https://t.co/arlhpVBPt3

College football games last longer than NFL matchups, and halftime length remains a key contributor to that difference.
