The Clemson Tigers’ College Football Playoff chances continue to slip through their fingers as their ugly start to the 2026 season continues. Brent Key’s Georgia Yellow Jackets delivered a crushing 24-21 defeat for Dabo Swinney and Co., putting their CFP odds on life support as they are now 1-2 to begin the year.
Clemson’s Shocking Upset Loss to Georgia Tech Crushes CFP Dreams
Last week, I wrote about Clemson’s underwhelming 27-16 victory over the Troy Trojans, concluding, “Can they turn it around down the stretch? Sure. But the tape exposes their holes up front, and more talented teams should have no issue replicating Troy’s success for four quarters.”
After watching the Yellow Jackets’ Week 3 win, it’s safe to say I was correct. I’m not saying it was easy (it took a 55-yard field goal to seal the deal), but Key’s squad clearly watched film on their opponent and punched Clemson in the mouth.

Take away Bryant Wesco Jr.’s 73-yard catch-and-run TD against zone coverage, and QB Cade Klubnik completed just 14 of 25 passes for 134 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also lost a fumble on a 10-yard scamper on the offensive drive of the game.
Yet, the biggest indictment against him was Swinney and OC Garrett Riley’s lack of confidence in him to pick up a fourth-and-3 at Georgia Tech’s 35-yard line. They opted for the field goal, which was subsequently missed.
This isn’t a freshman or even a first-year starter we are talking about. Klubnik was a legitimate Heisman contender entering the year as a third-year starter on a team championed to reach the national title game by many.
While the defense held its own for the most part (allowed 216 yards through the air and just 3.3 yards per carry), it can’t “bend but don’t break” forever, especially against competent offenses.

But that’s the “how” Clemson lost. Let’s dive into the “what does it mean?” Well, the Tigers saw their odds plummet across the board, according to PFSN’s College Football Playoff Meter.
- Make the ACC Championship: 8.8% (-29.5% from before kickoff)
- Win the ACC Championship: 3.9% (-20.9%)
- Make the CFP: 12.9% (-15.7%)
- Make the National Championship: 1.8% (-6.4%)
- Win the National Championship: 0.8% (-3.5%)
The season is far from over, and Clemson has a solid stretch of bounce-back games coming up: vs. the Syracuse Orange, at the North Carolina Tar Heels, and at the Boston College Eagles. However, they still have to play the SMU Mustangs, Duke Blue Devils, Florida State Seminoles, and South Carolina Gamecocks on their schedule.
The Tigers entered 2026 with championship dreams, but after three weeks, those aspirations have become a nightmare that Swinney and his staff may not be able to wake up from.
