Some players announce their arrival with a whisper. Chris Barnes chose thunder. When the Wake Forest transfer took the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against NC State, he didn’t just score; he served notice that the Demon Deacons had found their missing piece. The Washington State transfer blazed through the Wolfpack’s coverage team like they were standing still, giving Wake Forest a 7-0 lead before NC State could even settle into their seats.
Why Was Chris Barnes Expected to Dominate From Day One?
Barnes didn’t stop at special teams magic. He already had two receptions for 73 yards in the first quarter, showing the versatility that made him such a coveted transfer target.
However, this explosive debut shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s been paying attention. PFSN posted, “Chris Barnes was ranked 4th (90.0 score) in our Week 2 WR Rankings Against Western Carolina, he tallied 66.2 yards after the catch above expectation and averaged 12.4 yards per route run while commanding a nation-leading 58.3% on-field target share.”

Barnes had already delivered a statement performance in Week 2. During the Demon Deacons’ comfortable win over Western Carolina, the former Washington State Cougar earned a 90.0 PFSN College WRi score, good for an A-minus grade after posting a career-high 149 yards. That performance ranked him fourth in the Week 2 WR rankings.
What Makes Barnes Such a Dangerous Weapon for Wake Forest?
At 5’7″ and 168 pounds, Barnes brings elite speed and operates primarily from the slot. Wake Forest quarterback Robby Ashford has quickly learned how to maximize his new target’s explosive potential.
The combination of Barnes’s blazing speed and natural elusiveness creates constant headaches for defenders. He consistently makes tacklers miss in space, turning routine catches into big-play opportunities. Beyond his athleticism, Barnes possesses reliable hands and crisp route-running ability that made him such an attractive transfer portal addition.
His high school resume provided a preview of his college success. As a senior at North Shore in Houston, Texas, Barnes caught 47 passes for 803 yards and nine touchdowns while helping his team reach its second consecutive Texas 6A Division I state championship game.
Barnes initially committed to Washington State in 2024 and redshirted his first season. He appeared in only three games before entering the transfer portal on Christmas Eve 2024. Just two weeks later, on January 6, 2025, he committed to Wake Forest.
The decision has paid immediate dividends for the Demon Deacons. Barnes brings a unique dimension to their offense and special teams, creating big-play potential from anywhere on the field. His early returns in the 2025 season are already putting opposing coordinators on notice.
At this rate, Barnes is positioning himself as one of college football’s most dangerous weapons. His combination of speed, vision, and versatility gives Wake Forest a game-breaking threat they’ve been searching for.
