Kalen DeBoer’s second season as Alabama’s head coach isn’t going according to plan. He wrapped up 2024 with a 9-4 record, missing the College Football Playoff entirely. While he tied the school record for wins by a first-year coach, that’s cold comfort for fans who grew accustomed to Nick Saban’s championship-level expectations. The pressure keeps mounting, and DeBoer knows it.
Last week’s loss to Florida State stung even more after FSU quarterback Tommy Castellanos talked trash before kickoff and then backed it up on the field. DeBoer’s team couldn’t silence the chatter, leaving him to face more inevitable comparisons to his legendary predecessor.
How Does Cam Newton’s Experience Help Kalen DeBoer Navigate the Pressure?
Newton understands the weight of following a legend. The former Auburn quarterback shared his perspective on his 4th and 1 podcast, drawing from his own experience stepping into Tom Brady’s shadow with the New England Patriots.
“And I know coach DeBoer has probably heard his fair share of, ‘what Saban woulda done?’,” Newton said. “I’ve dealt with that. I was the quarterback that came right behind Tom Brady. And how many times I heard, ‘man, with Brady.’ Man, listen, bruh, I ain’t Brady.”

Despite offering understanding, Newton didn’t hold back when critiquing DeBoer’s team against FSU. His assessment was harsh but direct.
“We’ve never, and I mean never, uttered these words. Not in my adult life,” Newton said. “Alabama looked soft. Alabama got dominated at the line of scrimmage.”
Why Does Newton Think DeBoer Has the Toughest Job in College Football?
Newton highlighted the different starting points between DeBoer and Saban, emphasizing what each coach inherited when they arrived in Tuscaloosa.
“Nick Saban inherited a program that was on probation,” Newton pointed out. “What DeBoer inherited is an already loaded roster fresh off of a college football playoff run under Nick Saban.”
The expectations were set from day one, Newton explained, and there’s no grace period for adjustment.
“Expectations for coach DeBoer was already set,” Newton said. “What’d they say on the Wizard of Oz? I’m not in Kansas anymore. Well, coach DeBoer, you’re not in Washington anymore. And you have to understand he either gotta get with the program or let the door hit ya.”
However, Newton also acknowledged the unique challenges DeBoer faces that even Saban never had to navigate during his early years.
“But also, coach DeBoers dealing with something that Nick Saban never had to deal with,” Newton said. “NIL. (The fans are) not used to that. And I think it’s time for people to turn the page in Tuscaloosa.”
The college football landscape has changed dramatically, creating obstacles that forced Saban into retirement. DeBoer must succeed in this new environment while meeting the championship standards Saban established over 17 seasons. It’s a massive challenge that will define his tenure at Alabama.
