It has already been a rough start for DeShaun Foster’s squad this season. The Bruins are 0-2, still searching for rhythm, and now the first-year head coach has a quarterback controversy of the worst kind brewing.
The Bruins’ backup quarterback, Pierce Clarkson, was arrested on September 5 on an unspecified felony charge. UCLA confirmed an indefinite suspension as the legal process unfolds. As the legal saga develops, fans are questioning whether discipline exists inside the program.
Why Are Fans Calling Pierce Clarkson’s Arrest a Program Failure?
After news of the arrest broke, the fallout was almost immediate. UCLA’s statement stressed that Clarkson’s case would be handled under the school’s Office of Student Conduct and “in accordance with University policy.” That official language, however, didn’t soften the blow for fans watching a proud football brand slide further.
When Ben Bolch took to X and wrote, “UCLA backup quarterback Pierce Clarkson was arrested Friday on a felony charge, according to the LA County Sheriff’s website. @FOXLA was first to report,” fans responded immediately.

One blunt fan wrote, “Program is in shambles. What a complete embarrassment from what it once was.” The criticism comes from the unfortunate timing of Clarkson’s arrest. The Bruins are coming off a brutal 30-23 loss to UNLV.

The Rebels, celebrating their first Big Ten win in 22 years, jumped to a 23-0 lead before UCLA could even muster a field goal before halftime. Nico Iamaleava fought back with 255 yards on 29-of-41 passing, but one touchdown and a late interception summed up the frustration. It was the kind of night where every mistake felt magnified, and Clarkson’s off-field issue made things infinitely more frustrating.
What Are Fans Saying About DeShaun Foster’s Leadership?
Fans didn’t stop at criticizing Clarkson. They questioned leadership at every level. One compared UCLA to SEC programs, where off-field issues pile up unchecked. Earlier this June, D’Angelo Barber was arrested, and since 2023, Georgia has seen 25 football players arrested. “This happens routinely at UGA because there’s zero academics and all sportsball. No discipline,” wrote another fan.

Meanwhile, another fan targeted Foster directly, turning attention to sideline optics and wrote, “I can see by their body language that there is no discipline with this team… Foster is not a leader.” The loss to UNLV was painful enough. Pair it with a quarterback’s mugshot, and suddenly “discipline” feels like the missing ingredient in UCLA’s recipe.
Some fans went beyond frustration with Clarkson, instead calling out the entire structure of UCLA athletics. “Lack of institutional control. Means that UCLA AD Martin Jarmond and head coach DeShaun Foster must resign or be fired. Alums and donors should demand the Chancellor make a move this week,” said the fan.
The backlash hits harder because Clarkson doesn’t have impressive numbers to fall back on. The son of quarterback trainer Steve Clarkson, he bounced between Louisville and a brief Ole Miss commitment before landing at UCLA this May.

Through two seasons, he’s thrown just six passes for 18 yards and rushed 5 times for 9 yards. One fan went so far as to say, “National embarrassment. This stuff is quickly getting out of hand.” In his final season at Louisville in 2024, Clarkson saw action in two games as a backup. He went 3-for-4 through the air for 11 yards in a 62-0 opener against Austin Peay on August 31 and added three rushes for 14 yards in the Cardinals’ 41-14 rivalry win at Kentucky on November 30.
Clarkson hasn’t had the chance to prove himself between the lines. Yet his name is now headline fuel in a storm that questions not just him but whether UCLA football has the culture and control to withstand pressure. To change the narrative around the Bruins this season, Foster will have to ensure this doesn’t become a 0-3 start. Next up, the Bruins face New Mexico on September 12th.
