Bobby Petrino Accused of Nepotism by Fans As Arkansas Staff Overhaul Signals Return to Old Ways

Arkansas named former head coach Bobby Petrino as their interim coach, replacing Sam Pittman. How are the fans reacting to the controversial move?

After the University of Arkansas fired Sam Pittman, the school named Bobby Petrino to the opening. Pittman finished 32-34 during his tenure in Fayetteville. Now, Petrino, a former Arkansas head coach, steps in, presumably for the remainder of the season. He brings head coaching experience.

However, in the eyes of fans, he brings a great deal of negatives that could blow back onto the football team and athletic department as a whole.

Why Did Arkansas Fans Lash Out Regarding School Naming Bobby Petrino As the Interim Coach?

With Sam Pittman leaving campus via firing, the Razorback administration hoped to turn the page. In doing so, they decided to promote Petrino to interim head coach.

While an interim mostly acts as a placeholder, the move did not sit well with the fans, who took to social media to vent their frustrations.

“Has the new Harley and hot co-ed been delivered yet?”

Immediately, some went right to the heart of the matter and directly approached their criticism. From 2008 to 2011, Petrino coached the Hogs, boasting a record of 34-17. Everything seemed fine until April 1, 2012. On that day, Petrino was involved in a motorcycle accident.

However, he was dismissed because he had a passenger, Jessica Dorrell, a former Arkansas volleyball player, with Petrino admitting that he and Dorrell had a long-standing affair. Bobby and his wife, Becky, have been married since July 20, 1985.

Another fan commented that Petrino consistently hires family members to work on his staff wherever he goes: “He’ll have half his family on staff by the end of the day…good luck with that, Hogs.”

During his first run at Arkansas, Petrino’s brother Paul served on the staff. While at Missouri State, Petrino’s son Nick served as his offensive coordinator. Razorbacks’ fans fear that could happen again.

“Petrino family takeover?”

This is another reference to a possible nepotistic move for the interim coach. Instead of hiring coaches based on merit and talent, many believe that a surname is the only requirement for a coach’s job.

“As long as Petrino stays away from motorcycles, younger female interns, and Columbian caviar, he is going to bring Arkansas back…” a fan added.

As mentioned, the motorcycle escapade seems to stay with Petrino, as did the tryst with Dorrell, who worked in the athletic department, where Petrino was on the hiring committee that hired her.

“It worked out well here last time he did it, so…ok?”

This reply looks fondly back at the Petrino era, a period during which the Hogs won 67% of their games, choosing not to focus on the negative.

Petrino returns to the helm in Fayetteville, albeit on an interim basis. To the chagrin of many surrounding the program, he will roam the sidelines in charge once again.

How will he fare in this chance at coaching in the SEC?
