The Florida Gators have lost three straight games since starting the season with a blowout win, leaving many wondering how head coach Billy Napier still has a job. In four seasons at the helm in Gainsville, he has a record of 20-22, a .476 win percentage.
Despite a successful tenure at Louisiana, college football is a world of what have you done for me lately. With a losing record overall, a losing record in the SEC, and a season that looks on its way to falling off the rails completely, Napier’s time in Florida may soon be coming to an end.
Napier’s Tenure in Florida
Winning big games is what it’s all about when you’re vying for college football playoff spots. After a loss to Miami last weekend, the Gators are 4-16 against ranked opponents under Napier. Simply put, that’s just not good enough.
This begs the question: How is Napier still running the sidelines for Florida? Aaron Torres shared some insights on his show this week. “I confirmed through two sources, the only reason Billy Napier has his job right now is because of the four-game redshirt rule.”
If you aren’t familiar with how this rule works, here is a summary from ESPN. “(It) will allow student-athletes to participate in up to four games without burning their redshirt for the season. The rule will preserve a year of eligibility while still allowing some wiggle room for an athlete who hasn’t yet used his or her redshirt season.”
According to Torres’ sources, Florida has waited to fire Napier so all of their best players don’t choose to redshirt and transfer away. On what this means going forward from here, Torres added, “I expect him to be out in a few weeks, probably in the lead to the Georgia game.”
Urban Meyer Talks Napier Buyout
When you’re looking for the ‘whys” in life, it’s never a bad idea to follow the money. Urban Meyer offered a slightly different take on why Napier remains the head coach at Florida on a recent episode of “The Triple Option” podcast.
“I don’t see them making the change right now with $21 million,” said Urban. He’s referring to the buyout cost for Florida as part of the massive seven-year deal Napier signed back in 2021. “Where do you get that money from?”
Florida is caught in a tough spot here as 2025 marches on. They entered the season with high expectations, but have not met them. Fans are unhappy, and now the Gators must balance avoiding player losses to the transfer portal, paying a massive buyout, and rebuilding their prominence in 2026 and beyond.
The Gators get back to work on October 4th against #10 Texas.
