North Carolina entered September with a win, a 1-0 record, and four days later, one fewer major figure in Bill Belichick’s football operation.
General manager Michael Lombardi resigned Thursday after spending more than a month on paid administrative leave while UNC investigates a personnel matter. The university said the investigation will continue, but college football fans mostly saw Lombardi’s exit as another reason to believe Year 2 under Belichick could look different.
CFB Fans See Lombardi Exit as Fresh Start for UNC
Lombardi was Belichick’s first hire after North Carolina brought the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach to Chapel Hill in December 2024. His departure comes after UNC opened the season by beating TCU 15-10 in Dublin, which made the timing irresistible for fans connecting the two developments.

Joey Ellis viewed it as potentially the best outcome for a program that spent much of 2025 dealing with noise away from the field: “Oh boy. This actually may be the best case scenario for Bill Belichick and @UNCFootball. So much of the noise from last year was external. Haven’t heard much about Jordan this season. This too, also may be a blessing in disguise for the Heels.”

Jared Feinberg acknowledged one possible cost while still landing on the same side. “I know this could have recruitment ramifications, but I think this is a positive for UNC.”
Robert Garcia took the reaction in a different direction, joking that Belichick had removed the only person standing between him and controlling both sides of the operation.
“It’s starting… Ol’ Bill’s taken out the only person in front of him being HC/GM again 👀,” he wrote on X.
Tim Donnelly focused on the chance to turn the page: “And now, everyone can move on. Carolina is 1-0, and it feels like they are getting a fresh start in a bunch of different ways. #GoACC.”

One fan took a dig at Lombardi by writing, “Ya he was an awful hire. Dude is a lifelong loser.”
Another fan added, “This has been coming from the moment he was put on leave.”
UNC’s Investigation Is Not Over
The resignation does not close the underlying matter. UNC said its Office of University Counsel will continue the investigation and consider appropriate corrective action based on what it learns. Lombardi had been placed on paid leave on July 27 after a human resources complaint from a former football front-office employee, ESPN reported.
On the field, the Tar Heels supplied a cleaner storyline in Dublin. They held TCU scoreless for the final 49 minutes and allowed only 281 total yards in the 15-10 victory. Right tackle Andrew Threatt also sits No. 14 nationally in PFN’s current Player OL Impact rankings with an 82.5 grade.

Belichick’s first UNC team finished 4-8. His second is 1-0, has already won overseas, and now moves forward without the general manager who helped build the original NFL-style structure in Chapel Hill.
For fans who spent last fall wondering how much stranger the experiment could get, Lombardi’s exit produced an unexpected reaction: maybe this thing is finally getting simpler.
