In an ongoing issue, Belichick still harbors resentment toward his former employer, the New England Patriots, and team owner Robert Kraft. ESPN’s Seth Wickersham joined “The Dan Patrick Show” to discuss what he sees as a change of course for the future Hall of Famer.
“The guy can hold a grudge, but it’s also that he’s willing to be so public with it. And I think that is so different from the Bill Belichick we know,” Wickersham said. “I mean, this is a guy who, I think, as much as anybody in American public life, for the past 20 years has been careful with his words and chosen his words carefully. And we’re seeing a little bit of a different Bill now, and you know, it’s fascinating to watch the vapor trail from the dynasty.”
Wickersham’s viewpoint stems from the public spat between the coach and his former team. The tension escalated after Belichick alleged the Patriots banned North Carolina coaches from their facility. In response, Belichick barred Patriots staff from the Tar Heels’ facilities. Apparently, this ill will still exists because of how his tenure in New England ended when Kraft fired him. The head coach still holds a grudge.
This situation appears to be a double-edged sword for North Carolina. On one hand, the coach’s drama takes the focus off his team, which TCU destroyed in the season opener. With all eyes on Belichick, the Tar Heels can lose games, and few outside of the fan base might care about the team’s record.
On the other hand, the constant focus on the coach could hurt recruiting. High school and transfer portal athletes who want the spotlight may find themselves in the background while their head coach stands front and center.
While Belichick and the Patriots seem to be the only ones enduring immediate damage from this public feud, the bigger question is how this issue will affect all parties in the long run.
