The North Carolina’s issues, both on and off the field, are multiplying. Fans expected a fresh squad taking on California to turn around a corner after coming off a bye week. But that wasn’t the case this Friday. Another loss pushed the Tar Heels to a 2-4 record and it has again shifted the focus to the management led by Michael Lombardi and the head coach, Bill Belichick.
In the post-game conference, Belichick addressed some of the concerns that plagued the UNC football. While he tried to be candid about the technical problems, the media also wanted to know the truth behind Lombardi’s recent trip to Saudi Arabia.
Bill Belichick Gets Brutally Honest on Michael Lombardi’s Saudi Arabia Trip
Recently, Pablo Torre hinted on a promo for his ‘Pablo Torre Finds Out’ Podcast that Lombardi undertook a trip to Saudi Arabi, which came just two weeks before the season. He also said that the reason was to do a fundraising.
When asked about the same, Belichick had a cold reaction. He avoided the question and then pointed out to the university’s statement about it.
“Yeah, I’ll just talk about the game here. I’m just focused on the game. I’m not going to deal with any of this, you know, whatever else. University released a statement on that so (that) should take care of it,” Belichick said.
UNC vice chancellor for communications Dean Stoyer had told The Athletic that the trip was a result of the invite of the Saudis. He also clarified that university didn’t spend any funds to pay for the trip. However, there was no agreement between the Tar Heels and country’s Public Investment Fund.
This is the not the first time Lombardi’s role and actions have attracted negative spotlight. Torre also highlighted how Lombardi had floated the rumors of UNC banning Jordon Hudson, Belichick’s girlfriend.
“The person who had told multiple people around the program that Jordon (Hudson) was no longer involved with the program and no longer allowed in the building was, you guessed it, North Carolina general manager Mike Lombardi,” Torre declared on his podcast.
It seems these off-the-field controversies also had an impact on the game against Cal where UNC lost a close game with a score of 18-21. The team showed character but a fumble by receiver Nathan Leacock propelled to another loss and the program remains winless in the ACC.
Belichick continues to believes in his team. He reflected the same when he commented, “We’ve been improving every week. So, I’m not going to back off that. I think that’s true.” But the mistakes are persistent.
There is a need to eliminate the mistake, tackle better and play better on third down. The uphill struggle remains of turnovers on the defense. Tar Heels will have a week to improve before they face Virginia Cavaliers at the Chapel Hill on Oct. 25.
