Bear Bachmeier Shares Gratitude for BYU Opportunity After Unique Recruiting Journey

Bachmeier’s journey to BYU stood out as one of the more unusual and influential recruiting stories from the 2025 cycle, and he reflected on the move on Monday with clear gratitude.

“It’s been a wild ride, and I think everything happens for a reason, and again I’m so happy and so glad to be here at BYU and represent such a great university,” Bachmeier said. “It’s been a roller coaster, it’s been a good roller coaster, and again I’m just so happy and just so proud to be here.”

Even though Bachmeier joined BYU after spring camp had already concluded, he adapted quickly and climbed the depth chart in a short span of time. His rise culminated on August 19, 2025, when he was named the Cougars’ starting quarterback. He made history as the first true freshman ever to start a season opener for BYU.

Bachmeier went on to back that decision with a magnificent debut season, helping lead the Cougars to a 12-win season and a berth in the Big 12 Championship game. He threw for 3,033 yards and 15 touchdowns while also adding 527 rushing yards and 11 rushing scores. Those numbers were built on a high school playing profile, where he totaled 6,810 passing yards, 59 passing touchdowns, along with 1,724 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns.

As Bachmeier’s freshman season progressed, his command of the offense steadily grew. He now enters 2026 expecting full control of the system and noted how much of the playbook was gradually opened up.

“I think slowly, but surely everything kind of got released,” Bachmeier said. “I was really naive. I was asking sometimes I’d like to turn to LJ and ask him, like, ‘What’s a good check here?’ But I think I think everything’s getting unleashed, and yeah, I think we have an opportunity to have full command if it’s going to be really helpful for us.”

Bachmeier was the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year last season and also secured an 84.2 score in the PFSN College Football QB Impact Metric. He was ranked No. 30 in the nation, according to the metric, which was definitely an impressive mark for a first-year starter adjusting to the college game at a high level.
