After suffering a 32-31 defeat against Memphis, Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman is under increasing pressure.
In the second half, the Razorbacks gave up their 18-point lead, which means the fans have been watching another loss that has questioned the Arkansas coach’s job security.
What Did Sam Pittman Cite After Defensive Breakdown?
Arkansas’ defense allowed Memphis to mount one of the biggest comebacks in college football this season. The Tigers rushed for 290 yards and completely dominated the second half, leaving Pittman searching for answers about his team’s conditioning and effort.
“Yeah we didn’t run to the ball and we did not tackle well, we had missed assignments. We were either fatigued or we were not playing hard enough, on defense especially.” Sam Pittman said about the team’s effort.

The defensive collapse was evident as Memphis running back Sutton Smith carved up Arkansas for 147 yards and a game-sealing 64-yard touchdown with under five minutes remaining.
Head coach Sam Pittman said that the pressure surrounding his position has remained constant over the past three years
“The only way we can win…some more positive thoughts about our program, is to win some ball games.”

Despite the increasing criticism, Pittman remains focused on winning games rather than addressing speculation about his future. His buyout situation has become a talking point, with reports suggesting it could cost Arkansas around $10 million to make a coaching change.
The loss dropped Arkansas to 2-2 overall and extended troubling trends under Pittman’s leadership. The Razorbacks are now 7-19 in one-score games during his tenure, including just 2-10 since 2023. Saturday’s defeat marked another instance where Arkansas scored 30-plus points but still lost, tying them for the most such losses in FBS since 2023.
“We tried to fix some things defensively from a week ago, and I don’t know how much we got fixed to be perfectly honest with you, with a 500-yard day on us,” Pittman admitted in his postgame press conference.
The Razorbacks face Notre Dame next, with many observers viewing it as a crucial test for Pittman’s future. Arkansas athletic director Hunter Yurachek recently made “brutally honest” comments about the program not being “set up to win a national championship,” adding to speculation about potential changes.
With back-to-back losses featuring late turnovers and defensive collapses, Pittman must quickly address the conditioning and fundamentals issues that have plagued his defense.
