The unusual switch has prompted questions about how the two view each other after essentially trading places. According to reports, UCLA decided in April, choosing Iamaleava over Aguilar for the starting role after Iamaleava opted to leave Tennessee.

There is no clear indication that Joey Aguilar and Nico Iamaleava were ever friends before their highly publicized quarterback swap, nor is there evidence of hostility. Aguilar’s time at UCLA was brief, lasting only a few months, and his exit came quickly once Iamaleava chose the Bruins.
In April 2025, Iamaleava, a five-star recruit who had guided Tennessee to the 2024 College Football Playoff, startled the sport by transferring. Reports linked his departure to disputes over NIL arrangements.
Seeking to be “closer to home” in California, he committed to UCLA. Aguilar, who had transferred from Appalachian State to UCLA in December 2024, suddenly faced the reality that the Bruins were choosing Iamaleava as their starter.
Aguilar re-entered the portal and, by April 29, committed to Tennessee, stepping directly into the vacancy Iamaleava left behind.

“The main goal is this team, and not just me,” Aguilar said. “I know it’s a great story and stuff like that, but my main focus is to do my job and help my team win games.”
