True Extent of Arch Manning’s Injury Made Clear Despite Steve Sarkisian’s Silence

Arch Manning was injured in Texas’ overtime win over Mississippi State, and a recent report clarifies the extent of the injury

Arch Manning’s injury became a hot topic of discussion in the Texas Longhorns’ 45-38 overtime win against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Saturday. After an underwhelming first half, the Texas quarterback proved his caliber in the second, but the injury forced him to leave the game before it ended.

In the postgame press conference, Steve Sarkisian said there was no update yet on Manning’s condition and that more details would be available Monday. Backup Matthew Caldwell entered the game in Manning’s absence and threw the game-winning touchdown pass.

What Is the Latest Update on Arch Manning’s Injury?

An update on Manning’s injury was provided by Inside Texas.

“Sources tell Inside Texas that Manning suffered a concussion and will be evaluated further,” Justin Wells reported. “He’s expected to enter concussion protocol. Steve Sarkisian was non-committal on his status in the postgame press conference.”

The injury occurred when Manning’s head hit the turf, leaving him down for several moments before medical staff came to assist. He exited the game on the first play of overtime. Before that, he had also taken a hard hit from two Mississippi State defenders while diving for a first down.

In the game, Texas managed to erase a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to send it into overtime. The team said the 17-point rally was its largest comeback since 2007, when the Longhorns erased a 21-point deficit to defeat the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater.

The offense struggled with dropped passes and inconsistent execution, but Manning delivered a phenomenal performance and finished with a career-high 346 passing yards.

Manning threw three touchdown passes and one interception while adding a rushing score. He led three consecutive touchdown drives in the fourth quarter.

Sarkisian was full of praise for his QB1 in his postgame conference.

“I thought Arch battled his tail off,” Sarkisian said. “I wish we played a little better around him at times, wish we blocked a little better, and maybe caught a couple of more balls. But man, he’s a warrior.

“He battles, he competes, he takes hits, he gets back up, he stands in the midst of fire and continues to throw. And I think he grew up a lot tonight. I will say that, you know, as much as I think our team grew up.”

Manning has thrown for 1,795 yards this season with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions, along with six rushing scores.

The Longhorns improved to 6-2 with Saturday’s win and will host Vanderbilt for their next game on Nov. 1. The Commodores are 7-1 this season and pulled off a 17-10 win over Missouri on Saturday.
