Everyone’s talking about Texas Longhorns QB Arch Manning’s legs, but the real story brewing in Austin isn’t about the quarterback’s mobility.
While analysts across the country keep hyping Manning’s dual-threat potential for the 2025 season, a deeper look reveals that Texas’s championship dreams rest on a completely different foundation.
How Will Arch Manning’s Mobility Transform the Texas Longhorns’ Offense?
Arch Manning’s dual-threat skills bring an important new dimension to the game and are better than his predecessors’ qualities. His athleticism has been on display, differentiating him from his Hall of Fame uncles, Peyton and Eli Manning.
In his limited 2024 action, Manning showcased his mobility with a 67.8% completion percentage, 939 passing yards, and nine touchdowns through the air, while adding 108 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on just 25 carries.
His most spectacular moment came against UTSA, where he hit a top speed of 20.7 mph on a 67-yard touchdown run.

Several other reports have mentioned his “twitchiness” and “flexibility” as assets his uncles never possessed. At 6’4″ and 225 pounds, Manning combines size and speed, making him a “genuine dual-threat quarterback” according to NFL draft analysts.
Why Is Defense the Real X-Factor for Texas in 2025?
However, as PFSN analyst Oliver Hodgkinson reveals, Texas’s true strength lies not in quarterback hype but in defensive dominance.
“Forget the hype around Arch Manning (but don’t overlook the importance of the ground game), the ability for this team to harness and replicate that defensive success will define the ceiling of Steve Sarkisian’s team in 2025,” he wrote.
The numbers tell the story. In 2024, the Texas defense allowed 283.4 yards per game, which ranked number one in the SEC. They finished seventh nationally by giving up only 173.8 passing yards per game while maintaining a red zone defense rate of 69.2%, good for third in the nation.

College football analyst JD Pickell has also talked about the winning formula for the Longhorns.
“The formula you work with if you are Texas is that we just spoke to of the front seven, plus what Sark does well, quarterback guru, knows weapons, coaches Heisman winners, this is Texas, that formula in itself is indisputable, that will win at the highest level.”
In describing the defensive transformation, Texas HC Steve Sarkisian said, “I love what we’re doing defensively. I don’t think our guys believe that anyone can move the ball on them, that anyone’s going to score. And that’s a beautiful thing to watch.”
While Manning’s speed and agility are interesting X-factors, the report indicates that the team’s ability to excel on defense will be the deciding factor in achieving the championship. Given that Texas has championship odds of +550, their championship fate depends on the defense rather than the quarterback’s mobility.
Regardless, the Longhorns will be put to the test in 2025. Along with the season opener against Ohio State, “UT” will take on Florida, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Georgia, and Texas A&M.
