Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners are set to collide in the 121st edition of the Red River Rivalry, one of CFB’s most storied showdowns. Texas leads the all-time series 64-51-5 and enters this year’s clash with confidence after last season’s 34-3 victory over Oklahoma.
Analyst Offers a Bold Prediction for Texas-Oklahoma Red River Showdown
The excitement is already building as fans look ahead to the latest Red River Rivalry. They want to know the momentum Texas and Oklahoma will carry into the series.
During a recent episode of The Hard Count by ON3, an Oklahoma fan named Greg zeroed in on just that, asking JD PicKell for his outlook on the Longhorns’ early-season slate.
“I’d like to know what you think about Texas. They’re going to be facing Ohio State, and then, in my opinion, the top quarterback and the top offensive line in the SEC, Florida. So, going into the Red River rivalry, what do you think Texas’ record is going to be?” Greg asked.
PicKell looked at Texas’ 2025 schedule before offering his Red River Rivalry prediction. He pointed out that Oklahoma’s road to being undefeated ahead of Red River is easier by comparison.
The Longhorns kick off their season on August 30 with a marquee road matchup against the reigning national champion Ohio State Buckeyes. That’s followed by a trio of home matchups: San Jose State on September 6, UTEP on September 13, and Sam Houston on September 20.
Then comes another major test on October 4, when Texas faces the Florida Gators, led by standout QB DJ Lagway and one of the SEC’s top offensive lines.
PicKell identified the Ohio State and Florida games as the toughest before the Red River rivalry. The Buckeyes will be playing their first game since winning the national title, and Texas will need to be sharp from the jump. Florida, meanwhile, has a loaded roster and a dynamic offense that could give any defense fits.
Still, PicKell believes Texas has the tools to succeed, especially with Arch Manning as QB1. He emphasized that the Longhorns’ success will hinge on team culture and quarterback play.
“I’m going to say they’re five and zero ahead of Red River. I think you have both teams undefeated ahead of Red River,” PicKell said.
“And I think Texas, with what they’ve done very quietly with what I call the other stuff, is what makes the difference in the game against Ohio State and the game against Florida.”
The 2025 Allstate Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma is set for Saturday, October 11, at the iconic Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
The series, which began in 1900, was played in Dallas for the first time in 1912 and at the State Fair in 1929, and this will be the 103rd time the game will be played at a neutral site in Dallas.
