Analyst Reveals LSU HC Brian Kelly’s Hidden Concern That Could Wreck Garrett Nussmeier’s Potential Breakout Season

An analyst warns that a hidden flaw at LSU could derail QB Garrett Nussmeier's breakout year, despite high expectations under HC Brian Kelly.

Garrett Nussmeier’s final college season was supposed to be a victory lap. The LSU quarterback returned to Baton Rouge after a breakout 2024 campaign, turning down NFL millions to chase what had eluded him: a national championship.

But lurking beneath the excitement sits a concern that could derail everything. What one small flaw in the Tigers’ roster could derail their College Football Playoff hopes?

What Makes LSU’s Offensive Line Such a Concern for QB Garrett Nussmeier?

History says Garrett Nussmeier should be primed for greatness. LSU quarterbacks have a knack for turning heads in their second seasons, and the track record speaks volumes. Before commanding two of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels found their groove in year two at Baton Rouge.

So, is it Nussmeier’s moment to shine? Many think so. But PFSN analyst Oliver Hodgkinson isn’t ready to hand him the spotlight just yet. He flagged a key concern in his recent piece: the offensive line.

Here’s the problem: four of last season’s five starters traded in their college jerseys for NFL contracts. That leaves center DJ Chester as the lone returning starter, anchoring a unit filled entirely with redshirt sophomores and freshmen.

The silver lining? These young linemen are homegrown, developed in-house, and have built chemistry over time. A few transfers have joined for depth, but the core has trained and grown together. That shared experience gives them an edge in communication, just as crucial as raw talent in the trenches.

Still, if they don’t gel quickly, the Tigers’ offense and Nussmeier’s big year will feel the impact.

Why Did Nussmeier Choose to Stay at LSU?

With the 2025 NFL QB class struggling to impress scouts, Nussmeier would’ve been a strong candidate for a first-round selection, right up there with Cam Ward and Jaxson Dart.

But the Lake Charles native had unfinished business in Baton Rouge. After putting up 4,052 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions as LSU’s starting QB in 2024, Nussmeier made his priorities clear: he’s staying to chase a national championship.

Despite LSU’s 9-4 finish and a missed berth in the College Football Playoff, Nussmeier’s campaign was among the elite in the SEC.

This offseason, LSU went to work addressing their weaknesses. On offense, key additions promise to elevate the system around Nussmeier and sharpen the team’s execution. But the real transformation needed was on the defensive side.

After finishing 14th in the SEC in total defense, LSU turned to the transfer portal to plug holes and rebuild the unit. The pressure is on to show noticeable growth in 2025, especially if the team hopes to make a credible run at the CFP.

Most Significant Question for Every SEC Football Team: How Quickly Does the Pressure Pile on Oklahoma Head Coach Brent Venables?

And they won’t have to wait long to prove it. LSU opens the season with a heavyweight matchup: a primetime road clash against Clemson on Aug. 30, airing at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. It’ll be one of the most anticipated QB duels of Week 1, with Nussmeier going head-to-head against Clemson’s Cade Klubnik.

LSU has had this game marked in bold. Since their last season-opening win in 2019, the goal has been singular and urgent: to win the season opener and ignite a season that ends with confetti falling in January.
