As the transfer portal reshapes college football, Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson confronted a crossroads moment.
Despite widespread speculation and tempting opportunities elsewhere, the former five-star prospect chose to remain in Tuscaloosa, relying on faith while evaluating his options.
Now the frontrunner in Alabama’s quarterback battle, Simpson believes the 2025 Crimson Tide will be driven by physical play and unity.
Faith and Loyalty Guide Transfer Portal Decision
In an era where the transfer portal often changes college football rosters overnight, Simpson chose a different path. Rather than leave Tuscaloosa for more immediate opportunities, the redshirt junior stayed rooted in faith, loyalty, and belief in his long-term vision.
“I’m not gonna sit here and say it wasn’t hard because there were some days, I feel like God wasn’t on my side and I didn’t really understand His plan,” Simpson said during the Manning Passing Academy in Thibodaux, Louisiana. “But I prayed about it. At the end of the day, there wasn’t anywhere else where I wanted to play. I felt that God had put me in Tuscaloosa for a reason.”
Simpson opted to remain with his teammates at Alabama rather than compete against them elsewhere. His deep ties to the locker room played a major role in that decision, as relationships built over years proved more valuable than immediate playing time guarantees from other programs.
“Some of my best friends who are going to be in my wedding one day are my teammates there at the University of Alabama,” he said. “Seeing them on a different sideline, it didn’t feel right to me.”
Simpson credited former head coach Nick Saban, along with Alabama’s team culture, for helping him stay committed during uncertain times. The quarterback emphasized how the program’s foundation influenced his decision to remain patient.
“With Coach Saban’s guidance and the guys who are on the team and go to school there, there was nowhere else I would rather be than the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa,” he said.
Emerging as Alabama’s Quarterback Leader
Currently competing with returnee Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell, Simpson is considered the frontrunner to start in 2025. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb confirmed Simpson is leading the competition, which will continue into fall camp as Alabama prepares for a new era under head coach Kalen DeBoer.
The quarterback battle represents a significant transition for Alabama, with Simpson positioned to become the program’s first new starting quarterback since Jalen Milroe took over in 2023. His experience within the system, combined with his patient approach to development, has impressed the coaching staff.
At the Manning Passing Academy, Simpson described Alabama’s upcoming team as physical and united, offering insight into the team’s identity heading into the season.
“We’re going to play as one, but also we’re going to hit you in the mouth,” he said.
Simpson’s approach to staying loyal rather than chasing immediate opportunities has earned respect from peers across college football. Clemson’s Cade Klubnik praised Simpson for staying the course, highlighting the quarterback among college football’s most respected players.
“Guys like Arch, Garrett Nussmeier, Drew Allar, and Ty Simpson… those are the guys that I respect so much,” Klubnik told On3.
During the 2024 season, Simpson completed 14 of 25 passes for 167 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, posting a 73.3 QBR. He added 44 rushing yards and one touchdown on eight carries while appearing in six games, showing flashes of mobility and efficiency in limited action for Alabama.
These statistics reflect a player who maximized his opportunities while serving as a backup, demonstrating the composure and decision-making that now positions him as the likely starter.
