Former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey headlined Kentucky’s roster overhaul under new coach Will Stein via the transfer portal, which included more than 30 incoming players. Minchey had been a backup quarterback in South Bend for three years, losing the battle for the Fighting Irish’s QB1 to redshirt freshman CJ Carr last season before his departure.
Minchey initially committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers to replace Dylan Raiola, but flipped his commitment a day later to the Wildcats.
ESPN Analyst Greg McElroy Pinpoints Kenny Minchey’s Importance to Kentucky
During Tuesday’s segment of the “Always College Football” show, former Alabama quarterback and current ESPN analyst Greg McElroy pinpointed Minchey as the most important piece of Stein’s revolution at Kentucky.
“Who’s gonna be the quarterback? It’s a transfer from Notre Dame in Kenny Minchey,” McElroy said. “He originates from Tennessee, is a former four-star recruit, and spent the last three years playing for the Fighting Irish. He only has 29 career pass attempts. He did backup CJ Carr. So there’s a little bit of a mystery there.

“But clearly, Will Stein sees there’s an IT factor there. If you talk to those at Notre Dame, that battle between Carr and Minchey was a lot closer than people realize. Minchey has the arm talent and pedigree, he also has tremendous athleticism. If Stein can work some of the same Oregon magic, the Wildcats are gonna be more than just scrappy in 2026.”
Several quarterbacks, including Bo Nix, Dillon Gabriel, and Dante Moore, thrived in Eugene under Stein, the Oregon Ducks’ offensive coordinator, heightening expectations in Lexington for Minchey’s potential next season.
Kentucky Coach Will Stein Lauds Kenny Minchey’s Intangibles
During an interview on “KSR” on Monday, Stein lauded Minchey’s intangibles, calling him the ideal linchpin of the new era in Lexington.
“He went to Notre Dame, so we all know he’s not very smart,” Stein said. “He’s extremely intelligent, right? Extremely intelligent. Can fit in any room. Just talking about him as a person: old, young, white, black, rich, poor, it doesn’t matter.
“You put Kenny Minchey in the room, and he’s a glue guy. So when I have glue guys as my quarterback, to me, that makes the locker room better, makes the locker room more connected. So I’m really excited about him, just as a person.”

Stein was aggressive in the quarterback market after former Kentucky star Cutter Boley departed the program for the Arizona State Sun Devils to replace the departing Sam Leavitt. With Boley under center last season, the Wildcats earned a PFSN College Offense Impact score of 78.4, good for No. 12 in the SEC.
In six appearances last season, Minchey went 20-of-26 for 196 yards while rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown.
