Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. Struggle To Separate As Florida QB Battle Heats Up

As the Florida Gators undergo spring practice under new head coach Jon Sumrall, the most critical question remains unanswered: Who will be under center come September? The battle between redshirt sophomore Aaron Philo and redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. has intensified, but neither signal-caller has managed to create significant separation so far.

Gators Breakdown’s David Waters took to his X account and revealed the latest update on the Gators’ QB1 competition. He mentioned that it was a “pretty even” scenario with no one standing out. Rather than naming a frontrunner, the coaching staff has been splitting first-team reps 50/50 between the two contenders.

Waters wrote, “So for the QB battle in the first scrimmage, I was personally told pretty even with no one standing out. Others have said/been told one or the other barely standing out over the other. As expected, still pretty even from that but have to wonder what Buster is looking for.”

“Both guys are doing a great job,” Sumrall noted following a recent session at the Heavener Football Training Center. “They’re challenging each other, but they’re doing it in a healthy competitive way. I tell them all the time, you don’t elevate by pushing someone else down. And really, someone else elevating should help you elevate.”

Philo, a transfer from Georgia Tech, entered the spring with a perceived head start due to his deep familiarity with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner’s system. In addition, his quick release and decision-making have been praised by the staff. While not a long-time starter, Philo’s limited action, including a 373-yard passing performance in 2025, gives him a slight edge over Jones.

But if Philo is the technician, Jones is the natural. The Jacksonville native and former four-star recruit has a quiet confidence that has quickly won over the locker room. After serving as the primary backup to DJ Lagway in 2025, Jones has focused on his mobility. He is actively branching out into becoming a mobile quarterback.

For now, the Gator faithful are witnessing a stalemate. Philo’s floor is high due to his mastery of the playbook, but Jones’ ceiling is tantalizing. If neither separates by the end of spring, this fluid depth chart could very well carry into the heat of August fall camp.

Interestingly, the 2026 season isn’t about chasing a national championship. It’s about the foundation. Success for Sumrall this year looks like a team that is better in November than in September, a disciplined locker room, and a clear identity that “The Swamp” is a place where opponents are physically punished.
