Steelers Insider Delivers Verdict On Pittsburgh’s Rumored Interest In Drafting Carson Beck

Gerry Dulac discusses the Pittsburgh Steelers' rumored interested in drafting Miami quarterback Carson Beck as wait for Aaron Rodgers continues.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could be in the market for a quarterback, but the franchise is not expected to reach for a developmental project in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. With Indiana superstar Fernando Mendoza universally projected to go first overall to the Las Vegas Raiders, the rest of the incoming passer class is heavily debated and riddled with question marks.

Instead of risking prime draft capital on sheer athletic potential, the Steelers are reportedly interested in Miami quarterback Carson Beck.

Steelers Will Assess Carson Beck’s Immense Collegiate Experience

Beck’s football journey is a marathon compared to the sprint of most modern prospects. He didn’t just flash for a single magical season before rushing to declare for the draft. He spent five years navigating the intense pressure of the SEC at Georgia.

He bided his time as a backup during two national championship runs, finally took the reins in Athens, and established himself as a premier pocket passer. After an elbow injury abruptly ended his 2024 campaign, Beck entered the transfer portal and landed with the Miami Hurricanes.

He orchestrated a magnificent final collegiate act in Coral Gables, leading Miami to the College Football Playoff National Championship game against Indiana. He concluded the 2025 campaign with 3,813 passing yards and 30 touchdowns while ranking 36th in PFSN’s CFB QB Impact Metrics with an impact score of 83.3.

The Steelers value live repetitions, and Beck has seen almost every coverage shell and blitz package a collegiate defense can throw at a passer. According to veteran reporter Gerry Dulac, that enormous sample size separates the Miami quarterback from the rest of the developmental pack.

“The Steelers have little intention of taking a quarterback with their No.1 pick because they don’t believe there is another first-round quarterback after [Fernando] Mendoza,” Dulac wrote. “But, one of the reasons they like Miami’s Carson Beck is that he has started 43 games, counting his time when he won a national title at Georgia.”

That immense wealth of starting experience inherently cuts down the evaluation guesswork. Alabama’s Ty Simpson and Penn State’s Drew Allar simply cannot match Beck’s massive inventory of live, high-stakes snaps.

Why Beck Is a Natural Fit for the Steelers

Beck spent his final collegiate season operating a complex offense at Miami. He routinely won praise from his coaching staff for his pre-snap protection adjustments and his ability to rapidly work through his progressions.

At nearly 6-foot-5 and 233 pounds, he possesses the traditional physical profile of an AFC North signal-caller. Beck does not rely on scrambling to bail himself out of bad situations; he prefers to stand tall and win from within the pocket.

The Steelers’ war chest of draft picks gives the front office the flexibility to take a calculated swing on a quarterback on Day 2 or Day 3. Beck’s draft stock remains slightly volatile following his elbow surgery and his late-career transfer, making him a prime candidate to fall right into a value sweet spot for the Steelers.

Drafting a quarterback outside the first round is always a massive gamble. By prioritizing a veteran prospect with 43 collegiate starts and multiple trips to the sport’s biggest stages, the Steelers are simply trying to tilt the odds back in their favor.
