‘I Could Relate to That’ – Carmelo Anthony Shares How $45,000,000 Coach Deion Sanders Inspired Him To Train Kiyan Anthony

    Published on

The well-known father-son duo of Deion and Shedeur Sanders has inspired other legends, like Carmelo Anthony, to follow in their footsteps.

Deion Sanders gained a long list of accolades as a baseball and football athlete before he began his coaching career in 2012 at the high school level. In 2017, he joined the Trinity Christian High School as an offensive coordinator, where his three sons — Shilo, Shedeur, and Deion Jr., played under his tutelage.

While his eldest, Deion Jr., did not carry forward with the game after college, his second son, Shedeur, has fully committed to his father’s mentorship. During the 2024 college football season, his growth is coming into view, as the quarterback has led the Colorado Buffaloes to four straight wins in the past few weeks. The father-son duo is now an inspiration to others.

NBA Legend Carmelo Anthony Took Inspiration From Deion Sanders

Carmelo Anthony, a former NBA player and a legend in his own right, has a son, Kiyan, who is currently in high school. The shooting guard has verbally committed to his father’s alma mater, Syracuse. On Thursday’s episode (Nov. 21) of his podcast 7PM in Brooklyn, with Kiyan’s college journey soon to come, Carmelo shared how he took inspiration from Sanders to train his son as well:

“I don’t think he gets enough credit for what he did in high school. The grind of him going back after an illustrious career and all of that, to go lock in. For me, that was like, oh, s**t like I’m gonna coach my kid. I gotta go really train my kid and develop my kid. Because I know I got the blueprint. I feel like then I could relate to it because I had to do the same thing.”

He further said that Coach Prime’s purpose did not just come from training his kid but rather his approach to coaching football:

“He went back and set up shop, and really showed that I’m committed to the development and change in not just my kid but football and how you train for football and how you prepare for football. That is special like that’s the story right there.”

Coach Prime Once Gave Young Shedeur Sanders an Inspirational Talk

On Sept. 19, a video of Sanders and his teen son was making the round on the internet. Posted by Coach Prime TV, a promise transpired between the two while they were training at the gym. Sensing something was wrong, Sanders beckoned his son over and said:

“We’re confident. We’re tough, we could make it through anything. I’m not going to let something take advantage of you. That’s what a daddy is. I’m here to protect you and guide you and lead you. I got you, man.”

The inspiration seemed to have stuck with Shedeur, as he’s notched 3,222 yards and 27 touchdowns with seven interceptions and positioned the Buffaloes to enter the College Football Playoff.
