Cardinals Star Budda Baker Reveals Real Reason Behind Staying in Arizona Despite Trade Request

Cardinals safety Budda Baker explained that his faith in the new regime in Arizona is a significant reason he stayed despite wanting to leave in 2023.

At one point, it looked like Budda Baker was on his way out of Arizona. The two-time All-Pro safety had reportedly requested a trade in early 2023, frustrated with the team’s direction and seeking a new deal that would make him the highest-paid safety in the league.

But fast forward to 2025, and Baker is still wearing a Cardinals uniform. He’s not just going through the motions either. He’s bought in.

Budda Baker Explains Why He Stayed With Cardinals Despite Frustrations

Appearing on “The Mina Kimes Show,” Baker opened up about why he ultimately chose to stay in Arizona, even after years of losing and a front office overhaul.

“I was drafted here. I know it was a different GM and a different coaching staff. But for me, all I’ve been trying to do is try to do my job at a high level each and every day,” Baker said.

“Of course, I’m a sore loser, I hate losing. And you know, my career with the Cardinals has kind of been more losing than winning. But for me, it’s just stay 10 toes down. Believe in what you believe in. I believe in this coaching staff. I believe in these players that we brought in, free agency, draft, very excited for the future. Just don’t wanna tell you too much yet, but I’m very excited.”

It’s a rare moment of transparency from one of the league’s most respected defensive leaders. Baker didn’t sugarcoat the frustration, but he also made it clear he’s not running away from the challenge.

Budda Baker Believes Arizona Cardinals Can Succeed

Baker’s decision to stay wasn’t about comfort or complacency, it was about belief. Belief in a new regime, a revamped roster, and a culture shift that’s slowly taking hold in Arizona.

The Cardinals have undergone a major transformation since Baker’s trade request. With a new front office, a young core of talent, and a coaching staff that’s earned the locker room’s trust, the vibe in Arizona feels different.

Baker, now entering his eighth season in the league, is embracing the role of the team’s veteran anchor.

Even through the team’s struggles, Baker has remained one of the most consistent and productive safeties in the league. In his career, he has recorded 747 tackles, 38 passes defensed, seven forced fumbles, seven interceptions, and six Pro Bowl selections.

He’s the kind of player who leads by example by flying around the field, playing through injuries, and setting the tone in the locker room.

Cardinals’ Future Hinges on Veterans Like Baker

Arizona is still in the middle of a rebuild, but they’re not starting from scratch. With Kyler Murray healthy, a promising draft class, and a defense that’s quietly improving, the Cardinals are hoping to turn the corner in 2025.

Baker’s presence is a big part of that. He’s not just a holdover from the old regime, he’s a bridge to what’s next.

If the Cardinals do make a leap this season, don’t be surprised if Baker is right in the middle of it, still 10 toes down, just like he said.
