The New York Giants are gearing up for a season with one of the toughest schedules in the league, facing a division that sent two teams to the conference championship last year and was won by the Philadelphia Eagles, setting up one of the biggest challenges in the NFL.
Their final preseason game against the New England Patriots will serve as the last test to evaluate roster depth. The Giants boast a strong defense and an offense with new pieces still needing to prove themselves, including running back Cam Skattebo, who has yet to play this preseason.
Find out what his status will be for this final game.
Cam Skattebo Could Finally Make His Debut in the Giants’ Final Preseason Game
Offensively, the Giants are one of the hardest teams in the NFL to project. The roster now features three new quarterbacks, including a rookie and veteran Russell Wilson, tasked with taking over an offense that has struggled in recent years.
The team’s plan has been to blend experience with the energy of its younger, more dynamic players. That was the profile Skattebo brought when the Giants selected him in the fourth round of the draft. He joins a running back group led by Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary on the depth chart.
Skattebo dealt with a hamstring issue during the preseason, causing him to miss several practices and the first two preseason games. This hurt his chances of climbing the depth chart and possibly passing Singletary.
However, on Tuesday, August 19, he returned to practice, participating in team drills and appearing on track to be available for the Giants’ final preseason game on Thursday, August 21.

That game will be a key opportunity for Skattebo to showcase how he can contribute to the offense and possibly carve out a role in the rotation, even as early as Week 1, in specific packages. His skill set is different from Singletary’s, which could help him earn snaps despite being lower on the depth chart.
In his final college season, Skattebo stood out with a remarkable 2,316 scrimmage yards in just 13 games, scoring 24 total touchdowns and cementing himself as one of the most complete skill players in this year’s draft.

New York’s offense was one of the worst in the NFL last season, finishing 31st in the PFSN Offense+ metric. Outside of Malik Nabers and Tracy Jr., few skill players gave fans much reason for excitement. That’s why the team chose to invest in a playmaker like Skattebo in the fourth round of the draft.
The Giants wrap up their preseason this Thursday against the Patriots at 8:00 p.m. EDT, with the game streaming on Prime Video.
