Cam Skattebo has taken the NFL by storm with his physical style of play during his rookie season with the New York Giants. He has become a social media sensation with fans reacting to one or multiple of his plays each week.
Skattebo once again made a play that has sparked debate on social media, and there’s a wide range of views about how he plays football.
Cam Skattebo’s Violent Week 7 Run Sparks Conversation on Social Media
Many fans have come to love Skattebo for the physical nature and throwback style with which he plays the position. This was evident once again against the Denver Broncos after Skattebo lowered his head on a defender after he had already crossed the plane of the end zone for a touchdown.
“Bro use to run into street poles,” said one fan on ‘X’.

The fourth round pick out of Arizona State has burst onto the scene as a rookie and helped change the public perception of the Giants franchise. He and fellow rookie Jaxson Dart have invigorated a lifeless Giants offense that has struggled in recent years.
“Honestly love the energy some of these players are starting to exude this season. Between Skattebo and Baker Mayfield they both give off infectious high energy vibes,” said another fan.

That energy has not only been evident on the field, but it was also on full display after the week six victory over the Philadelphia Eagles after he and Ryan Fitzpatrick went viral for ripping their shirts off on the postgame show.
Skattebo began the season behind second year running back Tyrone Tracy on the depth chart, but after an injury to Tracy, Skattebo was given an opportunity to start. Tracy returned in week six, but Skattebo played well in his absence, and the rookie appears to have taken the reigns of the starting job.
PFSN ranks Skattebo as the No. 21 running back in their 2025 running back impact rankings, with a score of 77.4 (C+). The 23-year-old running back has carried the ball 98 times for 398 yards and five touchdowns so far in his rookie season. He’s also added 23 receptions for 189 yards and a touchdown as a security blanket for his quarterbacks.
Fans Express Worry About Skattebo’s Longevity
While fans find his physicality entertaining, there is a human element to the sport, and many have expressed concerns with how Skattebo plays and how it could affect him long term.
“Watching someone play football like they have zero regard for their own safety is equal parts impressive and deeply concerning,” another fan said of Skattebo.

The running back position has long been a position that has not received the financial benefits that other positions have receive after the end of a rookie contract. Much of that has been attributed to the shorter life span of a running back in the NFL due to the bruising physical nature of running between the tackles and taking so much contact.
While there are exceptions to the rule, and some players, such as Derrick Henry, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, and others have received substantial contracts in free agency and succeeded deep into their careers, there are also numerous others who have fizzled out after their rookie contracts ended and were never the same.
“He’ll probably have 5-6 quality years in the NFL before injuries end it, but that’s the average life of an NFL RB anyhow,” added another fan.
That killer attitude is what gives him the confidence to play the way he does. If you take that away from him then you remove the essence of
who he is.

For every player who has sustained longevity like Henry, there are also cases such as Todd Gurley, David Johnson or Jamaal Charles. Skattebo has his whole career ahead of him, but football is a violent game, and at the position that takes the most punishment, one hit could alter everything for a player.
“I really do worry about him,” said another fan. “I wonder how he will be health-wise in 20 years.”

The physical toll of repeatedly taking hits to the head and body has different effects on different people.
Fans have found joy in watching Skattebo run through opposing defenders and deliver punishment. However, they would also like to see him have a long fruitful career, which is why the discussion features such a wide range of opinions.
Whether Skattebo can sustain this style of play of several years remains to be seen, but at the moment he is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL. Skattebo and the Giants will look to get back in the win column in week eight on the road against the Eagles.
