Cam Skattebo has been having a strong rookie season with the New York Giants since taking over as their starting running back. In the six games this season that he has recorded more than three carries, he has rushed for 401 yards and five touchdowns.
The rising star carried the ball just three times in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles before he was forced to leave the game with a devastating ankle injury. Head coach Brian Daboll recently provided an update on his status, a day after he was injured.
Cam Skattebo injury update and timeline for return
Skattebo injured his ankle in just the second quarter of the Giants’ Week 8 game against the Eagles. He had to be carted to the locker room, which is never a positive sign for a potential return. He was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the contest and later diagnosed with a dislocated ankle.
The news got even worse in the aftermath when the team announced that the injury would require surgery. Daboll provided an update on Monday following the procedure, according to Giants beat reporter Art Stapleton.
“All went well. He’s recovering, and obviously he’ll be missed, but on the road to recovery,” Daboll explained.

Stapleton added that Daboll also said that Skattebo has a chance of being released from the hospital as early as Monday. While this would be a step in the right direction, the standout rookie appears to have a long road ahead of him before he returns to the football field.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the running back will miss the rest of the 2025 season and will hope to return for the opening game of next year.

In his absence, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary are expected to see an increased workload. Tracy opened the season as their starter before Skattebo quickly emerged into a workhorse role. The rookie will now focus on his recovery and look to resume this position next year, potentially.
