When Cam Newton stepped into the NFL as the No. 1 overall pick, he didn’t just meet expectations. He shattered them. The former Carolina Panthers quarterback threw for 4,051 yards and 21 touchdowns while adding 706 yards and 14 scores on the ground as a rookie, quickly proving he was the right choice for Carolina.
Now, the former MVP is backing another young quarterback to follow a similar path.
Why Does Cam Newton Believe Cam Ward Will Break Out in 2025?
The 2025 NFL rookie class is loaded with talent. Names like Ashton Jeanty, Travis Hunter, and Abdul Carter are all expected to turn heads when they hit the field.
However, Newton, a former NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Newton, believes one rookie stands out above the rest.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, when asked which rookie would have a breakout year in 2025, Newton named Cam Ward, the Tennessee Titans’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“I think Cam Ward,” Newton responded. “He has the most grace out of all the NFL rookies. The No. 1 pick. Teams and fans will be a little more patient with him more than any other person.”
Newton makes a solid point about Ward’s situation. As the No. 1 overall pick and a quarterback, Ward faces high expectations, but that status also buys him time. Fans understand he’s a long-term investment, which should ease some of the immediate pressure as he develops his game.
What Makes Ward Ready for NFL Success?
There’s no question Ward has the talent to succeed at the professional level. He shined in his final college season with the Miami Hurricanes after transferring from Washington State, where he spent two years honing his skills.
During the 2024 season, Ward threw for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns, and only seven interceptions for the Hurricanes. Those numbers showed he had the arm talent and decision-making ability to succeed at the next level.
Unfortunately for Ward, he was drafted into a challenging situation in Tennessee. The Titans had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL during the 2024 season. Despite only playing 12 games, quarterback Will Levis was sacked the 12th-most times in the league, highlighting the protection issues Ward will inherit.
Adding to these concerns, Tennessee doesn’t have an elite group of wide receivers. Calvin Ridley currently serves as their top option, but the supporting cast remains thin. If Ward wants to live up to Newton’s prediction of a breakout season, then he’ll need to elevate the entire Titans roster around him.
That’s a considerable challenge for any rookie quarterback, regardless of draft position.
Whether Ward reaches elite status in his rookie season or not, getting praise from a former No. 1 overall pick like Newton should boost the young quarterback’s confidence as he prepares for his first NFL season. Newton knows exactly what it takes to succeed from day one, making his endorsement particularly meaningful for Ward’s development.
